NY chicken lover!!!!

They can be very convincing! A couple years ago they did a thread on using aluminum foil in ur coop to encourage hens to go broody. At the time half my flock was broody and their house had foil insulation in their ceiling. I was totally taken by the story.

My day was full of rubber snakes, false stories, and schedule "changes". My coworkers think they're funny. They actually are sometimes. :) I don't believe anything at this point tho.

if you do please let me know. I'm still in need of one.

I was going to make my own, incubator warehouse has digital kits to make it easier,

heater/fan digital, will run a turner motor also. Just need a cooler or styrofoam cooler, vids on youtube. You can use a little giant turner or build your own and buy the $10 motor. The incukit mini is $50 and I bet it works as good as a hova-bator. They have them for desktop or incukit xl for cabinet. Decided to wait till I have a need for a cabinet frigabator.
So I made the wife buy me a hova-bator 1588 for my birthday. Almost ordered it earlier, glad I waited. It comes with a IncuTurn turner now same price as the other style. Rolls the eggs, and all egg sizes, dont have to change anything for quail to goose, holds 42 chicken eggs. $200 with turner shipped, a chunk of change but many swear by that one, and I didn't want to buy a cheap one and regret it, and didn't feel like building one right now.

That's just it. They pick at a real fear for some and a real hope for others at the same time while making the impossible sound possible. Very creative and tricky. We have come to trust BYC for good information, so why would we suspect such. You are not at all alone.

I bought the 1588 as my first. I just don't have the time, nor want to spend the time to tweak an incubator. 21 days is a long time to wait and see if it works good. Course when the turner came with a broken row I wasn't happy but just looked at it as a deterrent from setting more eggs.

See the thing is I don't lose a lot of birds so I don't need a lot of replacements. Plus if I get 12 eggs a day that's more than enough for us and to sell to friends. My biggest problem is where to put hens that go broody and they DO go broody. If every hen hatched out two chicks I'd be over run in a season. This is why I say build the biggest coop or coops you can. A store bought coop will NOT be big enough.

Too I suggest buying a Garden Shed, not a designated coop. Then when the chickens are gone you can convert it back to a nice garden shed, playhouse or office.

Just google converted garden sheds and get lots of ideas. You can't do that with this.

Here's the thing...for me it wasn't far off. We genetically modify everything now...how hard would it be to make something that changes the color of the egg? I just don't think there is enough of a market for it or they would be coming up with something.

We already mess with the genetics of plants and animals. I bet they will have this very soon if they do find a market for it.

Absolutely! With canaries, there's color factor food to exaggerate the red-orange color in their feathers. This is something canary people have been doing for many years. Why wouldn't there be foods that affect the color of eggs?

I finally got caught up. I wanted to post a kitchen update. Life is still as busy as ever. I have a feather club meeting later, tons of laundry to fold, a school project to help with, fence fixing, need to start seeds yet, and the list goes on.........
My first hatch of the season is due monday, put the eggs in lock down last night.

Gramma I hope you're healing well and i am sorry for your losses.

Congrats to Luv.

Well wishes to everyone else.

Oh and the up north chickenstock that i thought was going to happen this year isn't happening. Something came up and she can't host, such is life.

Well now if you really wanted to color Uncooked eggs you can. Simply use either food coloring or other natural colorings. Just dip your white eggs in cold vinegar with the color added. There are many natural food colorings on the market I think. Even chickens don't lay and even colored egg sometimes.

As for GMO's please keep in mind that there is a difference between GMO's and GEO's. (Genetically engineered organisms)

GEO's are created to resist chemicals or enhance resistance to chemical. My concern is if GEO corn can change the make up of other varieties simply by crossing the two, what does it do to my body when I eat it?

On the other hand I doubt crossing Yellow corn with colorful Indian corn will have much effect. Will it?

Crossing a Red tomato to a yellow and getting an orange variety may change they taste but not have any danger.

Hybrid chickens are GMO's. I'd read they were trying to make a GEO chicken that did not have feathers.

It's the same with Seedless watermelon and grapes. Crossing one type to another will give you the hybrid.

My Josta Berries are a cross between a Black currant and the Gooseberry.

Too there are more varieties of Legbars than just the Cream. While they were created for sex linkage they just did not take off like the CCL.

I guess my point is that not all GMO's are the danger we think they are.
