NY chicken lover!!!!

@rancher hicks I've seen your Marsh Daisies on Craig's List, hard to believe you can't sell them. Maybe your messing up by selling them for a reasonable price. Triple the price, add how rare and special they are. You never know, weird people out there, you might get a bite.

it seems like I should go this route. If I just send my cockerels to the pasture they'll be less productive. I'll have to get my barn set up with the system.

I did do some caponizing last year. I used extra cockerels from a couple laying breeds bc that's what I had & it's always so tough to find homes for them. They did grow faster and were meatier than intact Roos. And I kept a dozen of them together to maturity with minimal fighting (which probably was the biggest plus). Id like to do more this year and was just thinking today about which breed(s) to work with on this project. It would be really nice to be able to raise a good table bird which is sustainable year after year and without supporting the corporate funded crosses.

I've been offering hatching eggs to BYC members and have given some to folks who come for lavender/blue EE eggs. I'm just leery of some folks who will take anything for free and not treat them very well.

Some folks don't want to raise them to laying age but then want them for $5 after you've done all the work. I may have to make a drive to West Windfield. With these chicks. I just think folks who are to lazy to put in the extra effort might not be good chicken people.

if you can hold what you have until May 28th and come to chickenstock someone might buy them. I just can't commit to much more than I have already.

the first has hatched! I'm excited now. I have to go in the morning and buy a bag of starter and a bag of bedding. Yippie.

:lau "A few" she says.  That's what I thought last year and ended up hatching too many.  Anyone interested in a Bourbon Red trio?

I think about either bourbon reds or midget whites. Hubby says no turkeys. But he also originally said I could have 6 chickens ;) now have 25 + hatched out chicks and he keeps talking of getting a few more at TSC.

Midget whites are smaller than my white jersey giant chickens. The standard is 8lbs and and 13lbs for the Tom, giant's standard is 10 and 13, though they get bigger. Beltsville Small White turkey’s, if you can find them, 10 and 17lbs, about what jersey giant hens and capons should weigh, and some roosters, I've read at poultry shows giant roosters are common at 13-18lbs and they do not give them deductions for over weight. White Hollands are supposed to be 16 and 25 lbs for young ones, APA standard calls for 20 and 36 lbs for Toms, now that sounds like a turkey, and you can hatch your own.If you can find real ones. Bourbon reds I believe get as big or bigger and very pretty, for some reason can't find definite weights on them.
Anyone know a good source for true bred turkey's? Only one I could find is http://www.porterturkeys.com/
They do have White Hollands, but it looks like most their breeds are more color variations...IDK?
