NY chicken lover!!!!

That's a momma fox. She is either about to have her litter or just did. Do you have a dog you can trust with your flock? My rottweiler has had to sleep with the birds a few times because of those blasted foxes. If you use a live catch trap for it let me know. We might be able to rehome it safely for you.

Not a happy morning for us. We lost a baby chick. She had been fine last night and this morning she was the bottom of the chick pile. No signs of injury just gone.

Folks who don't lock their chickens in at night get no sypamthy from me hwen they lose birds to predators. It's irrespsoncisble to not keep them safe. A coon or weasel can get in there and wipe you right out. Even locking them in there is a risk I kknow but why tempt fate?

Both my nephews and a friend lost their flocks to such nonsense.

I have other friends who have chickens but I'm reluctant ot give them chickens or chicekns because I don't agree with how they care for theri birds.

Seems to me some folks who want birds from me when I post to CL do so because they've lost birds. Then they just want hens. To lazy to raise chickens and find homes for roos. Or unwanted pullets.

Country maz will take orders each year and they could just ofder poullets. They just don't want to raise some chicks. Then us foks who do are supposed to just sel them pullets for what we bought them for as chicks.

Beer was that your pics? Sorry if anything I said upset you.

Guess I';m just ornery because I got folks wanting just my hens and not the roosters. They need to get real.

Especially if they're not BYC members. Same peopel who don't have trouble dropping a dog or cat off a tthe shelter. they can't be bothered with. Heck I don't even want a cat but when Pinky pie showed up we took her in. I wouldn't take a silky to the shelter and yo9u know how I feel about them.

Does anyone in here have Premier1 electric fencing? When I move my birds over to the other lot that we're keeping that's what I want to switch my run to since I won't be there all the time to watch out for them like I am now. Plus I don't trust my neighbor's dogs at all, and they let them just roam loose. They already come into my yard and bark at me and my dog. A little zap from a fence would do them good.

I'm not sure what to buy, though. I want a solar powered energizer, but I'm not sure which one to get and if I just need the energizer or the energizer kit. If anyone has any advice I'd be greatful! I'm probably going to be laying out about $400 on the fence so I'd like to do it right the first time.

Been here five yrs now with all the predators, from weasel and fisher to coyotes and bear, and a pig. Haven't lost any yet except to hawks. Way I look at it, I could lock them up at night, I get home after midnight sometimes... and let them out when I get up, sometimes late...and if something can make it into their run they could make it into the coop just as easy.
I miss having a free range dog, sure made it easier.

I don't believe half of the egg laying statistics anyway. I've had some breeds that are not supposed to lay good lay great first yr, some supposed to lay great and I wasn't impressed at all.
Isbars are some cool looking chickens, love the black eyes. I think I'd rather have them than EE laying green eggs as long as they were good layers.
They clearly out produce my EE.

I saw that pic of your fox. Time for a pig bbq and a new fox neckwarmer! That stinks!

@Pyxis I have been looking at those electric fences for a while now too. They look wonderful!

@Pyxis I think I'm going to look into electric fencing. Regular farm fencing from TSC that looks like string should work. Had a few recomended it, single strand six-eight inches high. Buddy of mine keeps pigs IN a fence of that stuff, single strand.

I haven't seen that pig since that day. Farmer saw it by my coop night before that, said he didn't know I had a pig....
It was sighted a mile down the road the next day. No word of it since. Either moved on or someone had a bbq.

I've got a premier electric net fence with solar charger and I love it! It is very easy to work with and easy to change the shape and/or location of the run. Suggestions: buy the strongest energizer you can afford. I like the 48" netting with single spike posts. Also note that the solar charger is not as strong in the winter d/t less light and when the snow grounds the fence for u. Tall grass will also ground it and weaken the charge. Some birds will hop the fence on occasion, but they learn where their "safe" area is. If u want to reinforce the fence between its posts, Lowes has white plastic fence posts that work well for $2/ea.
