NY chicken lover!!!!

Lapeerian - I know you are experienced - but I see a possible danger ... when chickens come out early in the morning - even in electronet - some owls are still hunting ! So beware that you have that danger that the netting won't prevent.

:)

I will have a decent amount of hatching eggs for chickenstock -

pure Marans (for the egg color -they will NOT be show quality in feather color - may be white, splash or black? Totally up in the air, but all pure Marans w/feathered legs and typical body shape).
pure AB (Arkansas blue) lays light blue egg, medium size, but production numbers (lots of eggies). Bodies are splashed (white or grey base) and lean like a leghorn - so easier on the feed bill.
Mix - mostly medium brown color in large or extra large eggs, some olive eggers

I can't wait to close my breeder pens and get back to one big flock again .... what a pain for so many multiple feed and water chores ! :) ha ha

They get let out of the coop at 6am, except for the barn rafter chickens during the summer, they go whenever they please. Right now they are confined to the side yard with the electronet, have access to the horse barn and pine trees for cover. They can also go out to the back yard and walk around the other side of the house if they were smart enough to, but usually don't. And occasionally they will range out to the horse pasture. The flock size now is manageable in that space, but to increase the chicken numbers... I still want a nice looking lawn. We have an area behind the horse pasture I could utilize, we call it no-mans land. It is mostly overgrown grass, hoping to get my brother over with his bulldozer to clean the old diversion ditch and clear out the sumac and other undesirables. That could be a good place to pasture the chickens, but will require electrifying the fence and a bigger coop. And no electric or water up there, would be difficult to get to in winter. Lots of thinking to do.

I'd be interested in 6+ AB.

That sounds like good cover ... mine always free range too - and have brambles and an evergreen row - so they seem to never have an issue - but I know someone in town who had an owl take her best broody one morning.

SO cool - your girls are well equipped - wonder why they decided to not be wary of the road ? Sorry for your loss !

I can have those AB's for you :) Hatching eggs, right? I don't know how many or if I can have chicks - I will be trying ....

Looking forward to chickenstock - I have to start my list now .... time is running short .... (well, short for a helpless planner like me).

Now I'm thinking of finding homes for the 2 light Sussex and keeping a few queen Silvia's, it seems their production is good and they're smaller so may not eat as much as a Sussex.

Anyone want Black Orpington Chicks? These are out of quality stock... I'm headed out for a business trip next week, and really want to minimize the amount of chicks in the brooder :). Willing to make a great deal for some one!

There is a large hay field across the road from us, so they seem drawn to it. Usually it is only a select few that wander over, but occasionally I will find the whole flock over there. We are on a back road, but there are some cars that drive way too fast past us. I have watched them not slow down as the chickens are in the middle of the road.

Yes, hatching eggs please.

How old are the chicks? Of course you are a few hours from me.

How many chickens were I getting from you ? was it 1 maran and 1 Arkansas blue pullet or ? anyone hatch yet ?
We never discussed how much for a pullet ?

Lost my 4 year old black Orp hen to vehicular slaughter. :,( She was in my first group of chickens. Was hoping she would go broody around Chickenstock time, she was an awesome broody. Going out to see if the ground is thawed enough for electronet. And going to rehome the other 3 worst offenders for road crossing to someone with a coop and run.

Sorry for your loss. I remember it happening to our chickens when I was a child.:(

none hatched yet - and I can't know for sure what is a pullet or not - I am not skilled at sexing them at birth - and you can't tell by color .... so you have to know I can't guarantee a pullet - you aren't committed yet - so feel free to back out if you want ! I think you wanted 1 or 2 of each ... :)
