NY chicken lover!!!!

Does anyone know where I can get composting worms (red wigglers) for free or cheap in the cny area? I hate throwing away kitchen scraps but don't have the discipline (or the stomach, really - those maggots are too much) to turn the compost barrel all the time.

If you don't add meat by products you shouldn't have maggots. My compost piles don't. Perhaps you're not composting properly.

There are many books JUST one composting and methods. I would think a day or two of not turning wouldn't hurt much.

If you have the room a nice pallet made compost pile would be good. Just google and see the designs.

at TSC you can buy compost helper. It gets everything breaking down . I don't use it because my chickens turn my compost pile for me and I don't use any chemicals on the property.

My rooster B.B. posed for me today with some of his ladies. I love him.

The babies don't like posing, so this was nice. I have too many chicks. I listed a group but now I'm wondering if I want to keep some. I have 24 chicks that are between 1 day and 2.5 weeks old. All are from this group which includes 5 other laying hens and a Brabanter rooster that are not pictured. I should also decide if I'm keeping my Pavlovskaya group. They're so pretty. My chicken math/ Morehens Disease/ chickenitis is cured with this recent bout of hatching, but I have to find room for all of the chickens I'm keeping. I have my new setup of my old coop housing 9 chicks that are 8 weeks old... wait... I'm losing track. Eeep! So much hatching along with a hectic non-chicken related life has me all confused. I know I have 55 chickens between 1 day and 1 year old and I cannot keep every single one. I'm happy with my base EE flock. I'm going to develop my Brabanter flock. I'd need to build another coop to house another pure flock, which I guess is possible and I plan to do- I just don't know when I'll find the time.

In garden news, we're tilling a new garden. The ground is rock hard and very rocky so it'll be hard work for a few weeks, but should be ready for transplants and seed sowing by Memorial Day. I'm deciding on fencing now. I have the option to do chain link, regular metal mesh, or wood/metal combination. I'm leaning toward wood posts regular garden fencing, but I'm pretty tired right now and will probably rethink all of my plans 100 times before the day I actually have to choose.

Speaking of tired, I'll catch up more with morning coffee... Good night, all.

This is my personal opinion ..if a Rooster is Mounting he is probably fertilizing ... if the hormones tell them to mount ...and mate ....to me that indicates ...they are fertile .. Rooster pipes dont take as long to mature as hen pipes .. Your eggs are fertilized ? it is probably a mix of the 2 roosters you have . sperm stays in the hen for about 3 weeks ... Scotty took on Papa Lucky yesterday ...the first time Ive seen this ..He took the fight to him ... It looked like a Draw to me ...however after.. Lucky chased Scotty around ..so I guess he won the contest .. Lucky - is heavier & shorter Scotty is taller and Lighter
what breed is Scotty? He's very handsome.

what is B.B.? He looks fancy.

B.B. is hatched from a "Wheaten Ameraucana" egg, but classified as an Easter Egger in the chicken world because he is too light. The breeder I bought eggs from was not forthcoming about what she had and I learned to question more when asking for purebred birds. It's okay for me because he is perfect for my flock, but not what I paid for.

Like I said, I love him.

He's very nice. I like his muffs and beard.

I would add more compost and peat moss to your soil. This will help keep it soft enough to work. You could do as I have done and keep working in more garden soil/peat moss/ compost as money allows. Eventually you'll be able to work it with little effort. You can also keep working in horse manure too. Some folks will give it away and you can't have to much horse manure.

Which reminds me I need to get some.
