NY chicken lover!!!!

My rooster B.B. posed for me today with some of his ladies. I love him. The babies don't like posing, so this was nice. I have too many chicks. I listed a group but now I'm wondering if I want to keep some. I have 24 chicks that are between 1 day and 2.5 weeks old. All are from this group which includes 5 other laying hens and a Brabanter rooster that are not pictured. I should also decide if I'm keeping my Pavlovskaya group. They're so pretty. My chicken math/ Morehens Disease/ chickenitis is cured with this recent bout of hatching, but I have to find room for all of the chickens I'm keeping. I have my new setup of my old coop housing 9 chicks that are 8 weeks old... wait... I'm losing track. Eeep! So much hatching along with a hectic non-chicken related life has me all confused. I know I have 55 chickens between 1 day and 1 year old and I cannot keep every single one. I'm happy with my base EE flock. I'm going to develop my Brabanter flock. I'd need to build another coop to house another pure flock, which I guess is possible and I plan to do- I just don't know when I'll find the time. In garden news, we're tilling a new garden. The ground is rock hard and very rocky so it'll be hard work for a few weeks, but should be ready for transplants and seed sowing by Memorial Day. I'm deciding on fencing now. I have the option to do chain link, regular metal mesh, or wood/metal combination. I'm leaning toward wood posts regular garden fencing, but I'm pretty tired right now and will probably rethink all of my plans 100 times before the day I actually have to choose. Speaking of tired, I'll catch up more with morning coffee... Good night, all.
A suggestion: Home Depot has tillers for rent. They have one for $38 for 4 hours. They have bigger too. It's a $150 deposit and it gets refunded as soon as you return it. Save yourself some time and back pain.

Thanks. We are using a rototiller. I'm going to go by hand as we work towards the apple trees, but it's not bad there.

I'm in that boat too. I have enough I would gladly donate several dozen.

I don't think they want that many and I get them back a few days after they hatch. I have more then enough chicks now but don't want to let the kids down. I'm hoping craigslist will have a multi color combo pack. I think the kids will like all the colors and all the chicks will look different.

your coming to chickenstock next month aren't you ? Bring all your "extras" and see who wants some.

I noticed yesterday that one of Frenchy's chicks is a frizzle. Not sure who's it is. Might be Cotton Buds. She's a Del patterned frizzle. This one is too. I need to move them to another coop and see If I can't get some lavender or blues.

Rainy day good for spreading newspaper mulch. It will get wet and stay down.

Planted some more Kale seeds, though nothing is coming up so far.

A rototiller would be good but here with the hard fill it doesn't do well. Of course I use raised beds so have no need.

Made an appointment to go get horse manure tomorrow.

I too have eggs I could donate. Just brought in 53, but only because I haven't been bringing them in right away.

Lots of chores to do and I know unless I can keep occupied in Alaska I'll be working in my head.

He is stunning! I find it very, very difficult to decide who stays & who goes. I always want to keep them all, but I know there's a "too many" point for the comfort and well being of the birds and my sanity (which is already thin) thru winter chores. There is so much potential in each chick, that breed or color focus becomes very challenging. Best of luck to you!

Well this will teach me not to go away. Just got back from being away for just over a week. I tried to make things as simple as possible for my pet sitter, but I came home to all the feeders empty, ravenous chickens & geese, and since she didn't pull any eggs, 6 newly broody chickens trying to hatch close to 100 eggs. It looks like everyone out there is ok, but not sure what to do with this mess. One nest had close to 40 eggs with 3 hens trying together to stretch their little bodies over the pile. I went out and pulled all the eggs that didn't appear to have much if any development, but am having a hard time pulling the ones that clearly have veining and visible embryos. I usually try to avoid using broodies because of the chaos it adds, so none of these broodies are proven. Also, upon candling, most eggs appear to to be developing on one side of the shell. Is this normal for broody eggs? Or are my girls struggling to keep up with their massive turning chores?

Any suggestions on what to do with my mess? If I leave the broodies where they are, the nonbroody hens will keep trying to add to the piles of eggs. Is it worth moving them all to a broody pen? Or is it best for all involved to toss all eggs? These eggs are not all on the same day development-wise, so who knows what will happen when they start hatching. Unfortunately I do not have incubator space available at this time.
