NY chicken lover!!!!

Checking in just to say hello to everyone!

It sounds like your all doing well with your hatching. Maybe one day we'll get an incubator and buy the eggs. For now we don't have a Roo and my husband wouldn't agree with it right now. lol

Girls are doing great from what I've seen. I did get a very thin egg that someone laid below the roost instead of in the nest which was odd. Never had that happen before. I grabbed it and it was thin. I noticed some cracks and by the time I got out of the coop with it, it broke all over. I assumed it was someone who needed more calcium so I crushed up some egg shells and put it in. They were gone in minutes. These girls sure have been odd ones. So far, they LOVE the game feed with extra protein some of you have recommended. We've kept them on it but I also added some of the regular layer crumbles too. They have been free ranging and love it. I find it funny that they'll go straight in for my husband but I look the the town idiot chasing after them to get them in the coop and when I close the gate, my 4 year old finds it funny to set a couple free creating more havoc.

There are worse things however and I like that we can laugh over silliness outside instead of being cooped up watching tv all day long.

Roos do this ...put the hens to bed

Put the chickens to work helping me Weed around the fence ..so I can put the paper down

The cat is still looking for the chipmunk...and getting brave ..he doesnt usually stay in the coop if the chickens are in there

The Hens have been adding eggs to TTs Pile ..I gave her 4 ...now she has 6
So when I put them to bed I put this knee pad in front of her ..she doesnt seem to mind ..and it keeps the others out .
I like to take her out a couple times a day to stretch her legs ..and let her eat , poop and run around some .
See her tail ...

Well now I can't say about the rooster but I do know chickens are strange. If you go into your coop at night you're likely to see them lined up by breed. I had eight different breeds so I just think some breeds didn't like the others.

The Dominiques were a bossy breed, and noisy. I had one hen who squawked for the others to come in at night. It was not hard to understand why hens are called biddies.

Aussies were nice as were the Buff Orps.

I had a young Cuckoo Marans roo who was young and gang busters. He's just sit near the door and dance with any hen that walked by. He was huge. I feared he'd kill poor Frenchy so he had to go. I regret giving him up though.
Chickens indeed have their mysteries. We've gone the pet route with our flock - each has a name and a chicken pension plan. One of our hens (barred rock, featured avatar actually) was seriously ill when we got her, and is very close to a red sexlink. She was at the vet's for a few days. Dejectedly, the sexlink went and hung out with the chicken who resembled her the most - a silver laced Wyandotte who didn't like pullets but grudgingly put up with her anyway.

We've also got a hen who seems to have a type: easter eggers. She does not discriminate amongst hens and roosters, either.

Birds are so visual.

Sad that the roo had to go. Best of luck with future gentlemen.

And to think we just figured, "hey, symbiotic relationship - they eat the slugs and maybe provide eggs, we give them food and shelter." Now, we're so charmed by these birds we're looking at running a chicken (including rooster) rescue five years out from now. Toss-up between that and a conservation effort of an ornamental breed. These guys really get their talons in you.

This is a planning board meeting where they are writing up a new ordinance. At the initial town hall meeting they had written an ordinance banning chickens, bees, rabbits, etc, tons of people showed up saying they can't not allow chickens! Basically the town board had no idea so many people had chickens.

The second meeting was smaller where my neighbor showed up and was super rude to me. People were pretty shocked with his behavior. But at the end of that meeting the decision was made to try to come up with an ordinance to allow chickens, rabbits, bees and other livestock with certain stipulations.

As far as I know this meeting isn't open to the public and the code officer just invited me. But that you so much for offering!

I'm hoping it looks good for chickens that I'm invited and can see what ordinance they're thinking of writing up this time. I'm nervous!

IF it is not open to the public - how is this government!? I know I am in Vermont - but ANY meeting - even a brainstorming one - has to be subject to Open Meeting Laws if it is municipal, state or such. ONLY clubs or things like that can have closed meetings.

I was on my local Planning Commission - and most of the time - the people deciding do NOT know the facts ... and the person who stomps the loudest gets their way - one reason I am not one any more and doing things from the other end. The more people you bring - the more easy to read handouts you give and the more you can say and prove and video - the better. BE PERSISTENT.

Yes I'll have to loan them my copy
Too bad you couldn't put together a slide presentation.

Now for why I came on addressed to everyone else:

1. generally as a rule I don't shop at Walmart, but.

2. they have sugar for less. $4.98 for 10#'s.

3. I needed lids and labels so I found that they have,

"Ball" lids for $1.76 that state they're BPA free.

AND "Mainstays" (made in USA) for $1.32, but don't state they're BPA free.

4. Can anyone tell me if the "Mainstays" are BPA free. This is important I think.

5. While the rings may not be important I think the lids are. A box of rings and lids is $2.32 Mainstays brand.

Thanks,

Hello. I need help. I will buy your extra eggs weekly as I have a buyer . They want 20 dozen a week and I just can't do it alone right now. I travel to binghamton every other Tuesday and live in harpursville. Its not a lot of money but $2.00 per dozen. Send me a pm if your interested in helping provide fresh eggs.
