NY chicken lover!!!!

Well the planning board meeting went well. They are submitting an ordinance to allow chickens to the town board for review! Then there will be a public hearing at the next board meeting. The ordinance allows 6 hens, no roosters, and has other guidelines. I was hoping to get a roo and use the no crow collar but I don't know now. So overall I'm happy!

Well that is good. Of course if you need eggs to hatch I can float you some. You'd have to get rid of any rooster chicks though.

Hens will still go broody without him.

Point? If you don't WANT to get a rooster. IMHO, his crow is his biggest asset.

FYI folks, Bantam roosters seem to crow more than LF roosters. At least I think so.

Silkie rooster I had crowed nonstop all day and even at night...

Yes I guess I had heard some bantams are worse with their crowing. I had wanted a rooster so I can hatch my own chicks. Right now one of my BCM from Greenfire looks like a boy and one a girl. Those would be great to breed. I'm split on keeping a rooster or not.

Came home from work to a chick break out- two of the three had squeezed out and were hanging out terrifying the big girls. It was pretty funny, really. The four hens would squack and run every time the chicks got near them.

I put the third one into the main run too, but after half an hour or so I did notice that one chick had a bit of dried blood on her face. I cleaned her up and got the three chicks more securely settled into their sectioned off area. They're doing great. Maybe I'll do a little supervised visitation daily- even though I know at least one chick got a peck on the face, I didn't see any pecking going on.

Awesome! They're probably OK, you'd notice pretty quick if they were getting picked on. I had a good introduction last summer, didn't have much of a choice, hawk killed one of my best giant pullets and came back for more, threw all of them in the big coop with covered run, didn't have any problems with the older ones, you never know though, I've seen some ruthless hens.
