NY chicken lover!!!!

So a girl I work with came to me the other day w pics of her new chicks. She was all excited bc she found SS juvies for cheap at the fair. Tho when I looked at the pics I noted they looked sick: pale combs, fluffed out feathers, eyes closed, etc. When I said something about them being sick, she responded 'yeah, they sneeze a little and one keeps her eye closed, but they're so sweet!' Yeah, sick birds usually are very passive & easy to handle. I suggested electrolytes in their water & whatever broad abx she could find at TSC and to keep them away from her other chickens. Well couple days later she mentioned that her own hen that she had put in w the new birds was now sick. Ugh. This is why I get paranoid about showing my birds or even walking thru the poultry exhibit at the fair. It makes me so angry that people bring and sell their sick birds at an event like that.

I hear you - I was really going to take a few over the last couple of years - but could NEVER get myself to fill out the forms because of just that .... I was too scared that mine would catch something - so even if I quarantined them before joining the flock - I would have been taking GOOD birds - and I wouldn't them to die even if I kept them away from the flock.

I know I have some good birds in some categories .... but I can't take that step .... :(

@tao chickGirlie is on set 2 of babies. The first set was 2 of chicks from the incubator. This set is 49 assorted from Cackle. She is such a great momma. Last night she was over 27 babies and the rest where cuddled as close as they could. Are all barbanter hens like that?

400
that is a few of the babies.

I know
I not sure if they bring them sick ( they shouldnt ) or they get sick from the stress there
We lucked out with our Aussie Rooster Lucky ..he is 5 years old now.. he won 2nd place ..and was in great shape .
We bought him from a woman near Geneva ...who raises chickens and over sees the 4 h for that area
Since then... I just feel sorry for the chickens at the fair ...they always look so terrible & pitiful...
I think I dont want my birds near them & always wash my hands after being in the building

The barbanter look quite similar to the spitz ..are the the same in body size ?
cutie is a boy ..I am still thinking of a hen for him ..
But my men hate Roosters that crow so he may need a home as he gets older

I too have seen sick chickens at the Fair, but no one reports it. For that reason I won't show. If I did I would not bring the bird back home. It could be the stress or they way the birds are handled and cared for.

I had some info on a guy that worked there but I can't seem to find it. There might be something on the Fair website on who to contact with a complaint.

This year they didn't look quite as bad.

IN other news I'm pretty sure that Big Delores is broody. Why do they go broody at odd times of the year? I'm tempted to give her eggs as she's just sitting in an empty nest box. She doesn't growl like normal hens do. She's just to nice of a bird.

She's one of two Brabanter that I've ever heard being broody. They are not known to be broody. If you want a cockerel to go with her let me know.

no more birds per order of the "King". I currently have 151 and only 25 are headed for the freezer. I do have 2 cockerels that need a new home though. If I can't re-home them I will send them to camp.
