In general new layers ...they will lay all winter ....Which is why most people get new hens each year .
They dont need extra  lighting... they are at the beginning of their cycle ..
Pullets usually play / stay  in nest boxes and squat for a few weeks before they lay ..
It shows they are getting ready to lay ...
Once they start laying.. they should be switched to layer ..eventually
If you have some who havent started to lay  it is ok to continue the chick food if you have some left ..

Thanks for the info. There's too much to sift through on the net to keep it all straight. She's been squatting for a few weeks and has been in the boxes playing with the fake eggs but this is the first time she's made a nest... it looks like a salad bowl lol. I thought she was gonna stay in there all night

Your Welcome ...there is alot of misinformation out there ..
it is hard to figure what is right ...sooo much easier to ask a friend
My little sumatra does a perfect round nest too

hi Peggy!! This is cow whisperer. I live about 45 minutes away from Cooperstown, New York and 25 minutes away from Sidney, New York. The property I live on and take care of the animals at is family owned, the owner of the property drives 18 wheeler for a living so he had to have a mature responsible person living here so he contacted me and I've lived here for almost a year now- December 15th it will be a year.

I'd give them a call. M&W here has a store but I bet the sell it out of their mill also.
Few yrs, well probably five or more yrs ago, I was getting my feed from a Blue Seal mill in Bainbridge, they are no longer there. I didn't know they sold bagged feed ready for store's, somebody said they did so I stopped. Had to drive across railroad tracks (their grain and minerals was delivered by rail car) to get to it, walk through the warehouse, up stairs to a second story office to pay, little weird first time. Then they would bring the bag to the end of the loading dock for the big trucks where I would pick it up. It was $4 a bag cheaper than anywhere. There would sometimes be other people picking up feed, dog, pig, horse, etc. dozens of bags they would load on their trucks.
Place smelled pretty good, fresh grain and molasses?

After all that work yesterday in the box she laid an egg today.... but couldn't get to the box lol
