NY chicken lover!!!!

this is my cochin. I think she (?) is a bantam. She is tiny bodied and enormous amount of feathers. She is fun to watch with the cats.

:)    All the birds are in the coop wanting me to serve them today .... they DO go out in the snow - but I do spoil them by laying down hay for them to walk on ... They are slow to come out on these winter days - but I always seem to see a few that find their way all the way to the bird feeder to snag the dropped seeds.

I've got a yellow bellied sap sucker that is coming every morning - a lovely addition to just the jays, chickadees and cardnials.   :)

'yellow bellied sap sucker', haven't heard that since I was a kid :-D
Didn't realize it was a real bird Lol!

I have about 5 HUGE bags of leaves and pine needles saved - I use that as my walkway, but I'll have to use hay when that runs out. :p

Hey, anyone have a recommendation for a good IDIOTPROOF cabinet incubator? Auto humidity, turning, decent thermostat - doesn't need to hold 900 eggs, tho. :p

Check out Incubatorwarehouse cabinet kit and build your own, way much cheaper.

Wish I built my own table top unit.

Hi folks. I hope everyone's Christmas was merry and bright, and I hope all is well. I was a bit under the weather with a cold or some such, almost back to normal now. Beer can, I think a yellow bellied sapsucker is a woodpecker- ish type bird. Y'all correct me if I'm wrong. It eats tree sap. Unfortunately I stopped feeding the wild birds when I started keeping chickens. I didn't want to possibly have diseases spreading from them to the chickens. I used to really enjoy watching them. The only wild birds that frequent my yard now are the English sparrows. I think they're stealing food from the rabbits' bowls.

ha ha :) not sure of the scientific name - but it has yellow on its belly and for sure is a woodpecker

It takes a big seed - flys to a spot - the same spot - on a tree and cracks it open - then repeats. Takes a lot longer than the other birds that do any eating and cracking right at the feeder.

that's a thought, thanks! I notice they also sell other 'bators as well. I'm still musing... :p

My Xmas went well.. the chickens are NOT happy with all the snow we got yesterday tho..

They also have a kit for making a smaller desktop model.
I bought the Hova 1588 with the new turner that rolls the eggs and you just unplug it for hatching don't have to remove it, doesn't hold 42 eggs though if you have big eggs. A comparable size Brinsea is around three times the $$.
Reason I went with the hova I want to hatch many eggs in one hatch. I'd looked at TSC farm innovators with fan and turner, a lot of bad reviews and on BYC also. A lot of people recommended the hova. I thought about getting the kit and build my own but much easier just to buy one. After getting it though I wish I built one, don't see how the hova is worth no $200.
Just a fan heater control and the turner motor, rest probably cost a $1. The egg turner is just a sheet of plastic, body of incu just thin styrofoam.
I had a great hatch with the hova and will be using it again a couple times the spring but if I could do it over I would have built one with the small kit and a minifridge and spent less on a better incubator.
