NY chicken lover!!!!

@Pyxis
So glad those birds found you! What a rough time of the year for those poor birds to be dumped. People are such jerks sometimes. Those chickens so very lucky to find you!!

Thanks!

Wow pyxis that is nice of you to take them in! Can't help our love of birds. For leg mites can you actually SEE the mites on the leg? scary. Hahah that one spur reminds me of the people growing out their nails all curly in the guiness book of world records haha

You can't see the mites, but they live under the scales on the legs and burrow around and mess the scales up. They get pushed up and look awful. The nails can also be affected and they can even lose their nails or whole toes (one hen is missing part of a toe). I didn't get close ups of these guys but this is what a bad case looks like:

Some of them are nearly that bad, one hen in particular.

So, on Tuesday I took in a group of OEGBs that someone dumped on a property across from one of my coworkers. Poor little things were just left to die. They all have scaly leg mites and I've begun treatment, but seem healthy otherwise. They are of course quarantined and if they come through the winter with no signs of illness I'll keep them. One of the roosters had spurs that were about to grow back into his legs and all of them had nails that were very long and starting to curl into odd shapes as if they had never been let on the ground to scratch and were instead kept indoors in a breeding pen. If this is true, dumping them was even crueler because they would have had no idea how to find food or survive on their own (not that they would have survived the winter anyway). Strangely enough, they all also have leg bands, as if they really were breeder birds that someone just dumped when they were done with them. Hopefully they come through quarantine fine and they can stay.

People can be just awful. Glad you were there to clean up their mess so to speak. I will keep my fingers crossed

that they recover well and have no disease that would prevent you from keeping them.

Pyxis, I'm so glad you could save them.

Regarding making incubators: I've made two and highly recommend it. My first was from a 10g fish tank and was not perfect- didn't hold alot and the homemade autoturner broke. My second was from a minifridge that I found on Craigslist for $10 because the compressor was broken. Perfect for me. I added thermostat and lightbulbs for heat. I made other modifications and can give more details if interested. The only repair I have to make is the auto turner, but it holds >40 eggs with modifications that can make it hold >90. I've hatched 75% with it. Here are some pictures. I don't have the finished fridge picture. The one with chicks is the aquarium. I think I spent $20 on the aquarium. I think I spent $100 on the fridge. Both worthy investments.

OEGB - Old English Game Bantams

^^^. YEAH, WHAT SHE SAID ^^^ Pyxis, you're a saint. Those poor little chickens must be so confused. What are you treating the scaly leg mite with? I had some EEs once upon a time that had it, though not as bad as your foundlings. I gave each a warm soàk in blue Dawn sudsy water & then a clean water rinse, dried them off and massaged olive oil into their legs. ***Online 'How To' said Mineral oil, but Olive was what I had. LOL. Aside from fear of frying, the birds all recovered. However, all of them list all of their scales, which grew back very slowly. ~ T

Just what is wrong with people? They discard living, breathing creatures like they are garbage....

. Well done Pyxis, looks like you have quite the job with those mites.
On a sadder note, my 'second in command' bantam rooster died yesterday and today one of the older hens' had just keeled over in the night. To make matters worse, our ginger cat has gone missing

. All in all, I am hoping for a more inspiring start to 2017.

Just wanted to sayThank you to Cutiepatootie. Thanks to her generous sale of her beautiful pair of Malines, I'm on my way to growing my own flock. My first hatch of 6 is now about seven days old. My second hatch of 7 is just 2 days old.

These pics are of the first bunch. More group pics when I clean the brooder. I can't Thank her enough. These are Big Beautiful birds.

So cute!! I've read about the Malines. They seem like a fantastic breed that really needs & deserves breeders like you to keep them around.

And: I love your chick feeder!!
