NY chicken lover!!!!

Anyone in Central NY rehoming some hens? A friend in mine in Marathon had her flock killed off by a weasel. The kids are devastated. Only the barred rock rooster remains. They are reinforcing the coop with hardware cloth. I offered my incubator if they wanted to hatch some come spring, but they are looking for a few hens to keep the roo company.

A friend in Ithaca is moving out of state & looking to relocate her entire flock. Pm me if you think your friend would be interested in any of them. It's a mixed flock, some mutts, some pure, varying ages. Pures include Barnevelder, spitz, cemanis, RIR, barred rock, Cochin, etc. Anyone else interested, pm me for contact info.

Yes! I'll send her a message to see if they found any yet. I may be interested in some of the pures as well.

Hi everyone- we are just over the line in Western Ma and I don't mean to jump in on this post, but I'm wondering if anyone out this was has one or two or three day olds- I've got four eggs (down from seven, horrible post office) that are going into lock down tonight and I'm worried only one is going to hatch. I know chicks don't do well solo. Any advice? I don't really want to bite the bullet and order 15. I'm happy to pick up and pay for them if you have any suggestions. Thank you so much!

Dont give up on the other eggs give them a few more days..
If you have only one hatch ..it will accept you as its mommy / flock .
You can try putting in a stuffed animal or a mirror so it can see itself .
It will peep more ...and you will need to babysit it while it is still alone .
It will scream if it cant see you ..or another human ..
I had mine in a little box that could be carried around ..or sometimes it sat on my lap
My husband babysit it when I had to go out
This Is Marker she was a mommas girl all her life

this was the day she took a shower with me ..she wasnt happy staying on the floor ...she couldnt see me ..
she pushed through the shower curtain and got in ...then she really screamed ....she was freezing ..I had to blow dry her so she warmed up ...LOL
Hopefully more eggs will hatch for you .
If you give a location maybe someone near you has chicks ..I know some are doing a new years hatch

I have a question. For those of you who are PNIP tested, do you also get MG tested?

I just learned of the disease 2 weeks ago when it hit an acquaintance's flock. Now I started reading about the major biosecurity one should be taking. I have asked around in big time breeder Facebook groups and found most say is everywhere and you can't keep it out. I looked into the vaccine but then found that it'll make your flock a false positive.

I'm about to mail in my PNIP test request and am curious if others have opted to be MG tested too.

I don't know of anyone who does have their flock tested for MG. I think most of us do the best we can with bio security. But true bio security is more like a commercial production. They practice all in and all out. Then they disinfect everything. I also heard that workers wear some type of hazmat type suit. This could be to protect the chickens or the worker from the high ammonia concentrations. Most of us doing this out of our back yard don't do this. I think most of us quarantine new birds for 30+ days before adding to the flock. Some of us have different shoes for in our coop areas. Some people make their visitors wear little "booties" over their shoes when on their property or make them wash the soles of their shoes with disinfectant. They do the same for vehicle tires. This would have to be done every time and when all is said and done it only takes 1 infected song bird to poop in the chicken run and infect the flock. I'm pretty sure most of us on this thread don't make our guest change shoes when they visit or spay down bags of feed after we pick them up from the feed store. In fact most of us go to swaps at least once a year, probably the worst thing for bio security. We shower right away and wash our clothes but it's still a big risk.

I think the key is keeping chickens healthy. In the research I have done some flocks test positive without any symptoms. Meaning healthy birds are not necessarily affected by it. That does not mean they won't spread it or show symptoms in the future, especially if stressed. The birds in the commercial industry are very stressed and that's why it's super big deal for them. Backyard birds fed quality feed and allowed access to grasses and bugs are healthier and less stressed.

I guess my point is do the best bio security you can do. Keep your coops ventilated and not over crowded. Allow some free ranging opportunities to your chickens. I think most of us who are into serious breeding cull at first sign of weakness. We may not know what the problem was, it could have been only a minor ailment but better to cull 1 and be safe then find out something bad and it spread and have to cull the whole flock. In fact I don't remember anyone on this thread having any problems lately. Hopefully someone else with more experience chimes in soon.

On the other hand if you did test and was negative I'm sure you would have lots of customers, but if you tested positive I'm not sure if they would require you terminate your flock. I know that most hatcheries don't test but there are a few people/breeders that do. Since they seem to maintain MG free status I guess that means there's hope for us too.
