I thought about buying one of those, but we have the add-a-motors on all the coops now and they work great. Just in case you need another (cheaper) option. Hopefully they will make it right!

Hi,
It sounds like everyone has given you some good information. Last winter my chickens were in an uninsulated coop with no drafts, but plenty of air circulation. Twice the nor'easters blew snow in my vents and the shavings were covered with a fine layer of snow. The chickens all did well. I did vasaline the combs on my RIR's tho. Make sure the perches are more flat then round so the feathers cover the feet when they perch and lay down. Otherwise, they will get frostbite on their toes. I used a little scratch in the winter as it is a food that creates a little extra body heat. My birds also did not want to go out in the snow. They would look out the door and say "nope, not today" and go back in. Carried lots of fresh warm water out to them too. Two to three times a day. Had to wake them up for the third as it gets dark very early up here in the winter. Took out an electric lantern and woke all their fuzzy butts up.
Also, in the coldest weather we lost several eggs to freezing. When they froze hard, the shells cracked. We use deep bedding of hay and shavings and we keep adding a little more all winter and they scrape it down clean in the spring.

That's all I can think of. Make sure you consider local predaters when you build your coop. We lost five chickens to an ermine last year. They are smaller then ferrets but in the same family. They can get in through very small holes. You may also have to deal with foxes, bears, cyotes, hawks, owls, raccoons, skunks and weasels. I'm sure some of the people on this thread who live in that area can help with how to protect you flock.

Hope it dries up for your move. This is usually an exteemly pretty time of year here.

Happy country hens

Hi, not sure how those roads are, but this website will tell you of any road problems in NY. I've used it many times in the last two weeks, since the flood. Good luck to your boys!
