Well, today the chickens got special treats - Spring cleaning and found an expired box of kasha, so I cooked it up ,added apple peelings and a few other goodies. It was very quiet in the barn while they were all stuffing their beaks!
Kasha would make a good 'once in a while' treat. It's only $3/box and it kept 33 birds very happy

In other news - our ginger cat came back home. Love to know where he has been - he wasn't dirty/wet etc. a little hungry and tired. He has slept most of the last 24 hours ago curled up with his Momma.

I'd love to know when it's coming here. This is my third or fourth eggless day in a row, which bothers me because I have five chickens that were born December 2015 and this is their first winter as adults. I thought I read that hens lay through their first winter. So strange. I always thought that meant that chickens lay through the first winter that comes along after they start laying. Technically it's their second winter. So maybe they lay through their first winter after birth, as long as they're laying age? I'm confused. And it hasn't even been that cold here.
Anyway, boskelli, I'm glad you're feeling in a springy mood, and that your cat came back. Maybe he was sowing his wild oats in your neighbor's barn

Yes, this is the case. It took a lot of medicine off the shelves. It's because they consider some of them "important to human medicine". So now you need a prescription from the vet to get a lot of medicines now, even some basic ones. I think tetracycline is one such medicine that is affected.

I considered stocking up on some of the meds, but since I've never treated my flock (yet) there wasn't really anything I could predict needing.

Got 7 eggs tonight! Of which 4 were green Previously had my buff EE, so must be the mix girls from Pyxis' Chickenstock eggs are also olive eggers. I know the AC/EE was likely, but now wondering who else.

Sorry your not getting eggs. It can be a good thing they are taking a break. They may just need some time to recoup a bit. Watch them closely for signs of illness just in case that's an underlying reason for them not laying but it's really common for them to not lay at this time of year. Days are starting to get longer so they should start again soon.

This is a bummer. Even if it's used only sparingly, it is nice to have the option. Guess that half bottle of Tylan in my fridge will stay there past it's exp date.

It's very likely - the rooster over that flock that is dominant is an OE. Do you have pictures of the girls? I could probably tell you who the parents are

Nice about your green eggs. Maybe some day I'll get a couple of chickens that lay different colored eggs. Mine are mostly brown. There is a creamish one, and occasionally, in a certain light, I imagine there's a pinkish- brown one.
