NY chicken lover!!!!

Rooster58 that is great!! Does your bator have the alarm if humidity goes low? Can't wait to see all your baby peepS!!!

Hey Sis!!!!! No alarm at all on my bator. I i know it went low on humidity a couple times before lockdown though. I would check on it twice a day. I put food coloring in my water to make it easier to see. When the color got darker the water was getting low. I know I said I was not gonna assist in my hatch but after watching those that were mispositiined struggle all day and the pressure from the girls, we did it anyway. Can't wait to see y'all. Hope it's soon.

My current extra pullets are already on hold, waiting for their new owners to get a coop, etc. I'm starting to raise out chicks, some of which will be for started pullets. But unless I ended up with more than 30 pullets, they're already on hold as well! So, while I'd love to help you, there's probably others who'd be able to supply you faster, since I'm limited in pullet growing-out space until winter ends & I can put young ones out on pasture.

 I do know @Chicken girl 15
has chicks that she's raising out, so perhaps she could help you in the pullet department.
I have 2 black barnyard crosses. They are from ba hen and spitzhauben roo. Let me know.

Welcome new folks. You're sure to enjoy chickens of any breed.

Everyone else:

Went to the Small Farm and Homestead Fair.  I was not what I expected. Lord have mercy it was cold. The Farmers Market was not to bad.  Some Vendors of private folks and some commercial like Purina and TSC.  Some ecology folks too but sometimes I wonder what they want folks to take away with them when they go.  I talked to some folks about Goats and Alpaca. Trouble is I'd need some staff to help. Too I'd need advice in getting things set up. Someone to look over the property and give me advice.

I didn't see much in the way of Homesteading. There were classes of sorts but the times all crashed in together. While I wanted and paid to go to the Bee keeping (the latest fad) talk, it would have meant missing the Farmers Market as that closed at 1.  And the classes were in other building on campus and it was up some stairs and very cold and windy. Froze my face.

Went to the class on Jams and Jellies that thing but it was all about Commercial stuff. Making your own BBQ sauce and selling it to the stores. That type of thing. I'm more into the cottage industry type thing.

I want to order some Ducks too.  No Poultry folks at all.  Couldn't make that class if there was one.  Talked to the  Nature Wise lady and learned somethings, so that was helpful.

Each cost $5 so the brochure said but then some were free even though the brochure said $5.   Anyhow I got my $5 back for the bee thing and went to the Farmers Market.  If I'd gone to the Bee thing I would not have made the Farmers Market.  I did buy a couple of things. Got some coupons (which I will use) and free pens.

I expect next year it will be better and more organized.

This cold weather is putting a damper on things for sure.  The chickens lean to got blown over and it's too cold to fix that.

DW is getting Chemo and I'm trying to keep it all together for her sake.  Work has been tough the last few shifts. Not the job itself but persons I can't speak of.  I just want a peaceful work place. I like my job expect to be there if things settle down. I'm too old for the drama.

Gave out my card with BYC on the back and told folks about Chickenstock. I hope some folks come to meet all your fine chicken people. Too I hope some new folks join us here.

Anyone here keeping goats for hair?  I gotta research that.

TTFN,

Stay warm okay?  Love ya Rancher

I went to the fair as well and the fiber arts stuff was interesting to me. I had read about spinning but it all seemed unreachable as a goal for me at the time so I didn't retain the information. I plan on attending the fiber arts festival in June to get more information. I stopped to pet the yarn and fiber at every alpaca and fiber booth yesterday.

I also grabbed some bee info and my sister was considering beginning a bee endeavor this year.

I hope they continue next year. I considered it a win because I donated $2 to 4-h for entry and ended up with a $2 off coupon from Nutrena and 10% off coupon from TSC.

The cold weather caused us to move quickly through then head to lunch.

Rancher, I wish you and your wife well. Let us know if you need anything.

Rooster58, have a blessed Sunday! I totally understand why you chose to assist! My bator is a digital one, and it beeps constantly as it beeps at 62% humidity and I want it at lower humidity! I think I am going to get the one you have. TSC? I cannot set up a bator in a class that constantly is beeping... talk about distractions!

I ordered mine off amazon. I have a boba-bator 1620N kit. It came with a turner ,candler, digital thermometer, and fan kit. It was sold by incubator warehouse I think. I'll send you the link by txt if you want. Hope you all have a blessed Sunday as well. Love you all!!!

Hey folks.

It is finally time for us to start considering expanding our flock again by a couple of pullets. If you want to plan to sell us pullets in the summer - awesome, we'll plan for that. If you happen to already have an excess of pullets sitting around? Even better.

We're looking for something not already in our flock... or Easter Eggers/Ameraucanas or barnyard mixes.

The breeds we already currently have:
Barred rock, Red Sexlink, Brown Leghorn, Olive Egger.

We've got particular interests in Marans (especially Copper and Lavender), Faverolles, and black chickens in general.

Anyone got pullets to hustle? We're in Oswego.

It's a two and a half hour drive, but I do have 6 pullets for sale hatched last year and starting to lay. Black, white, and a few colors in between, an one lovely cochin. I have mostly marans mix and ee.

I only raise marans. I have mostly black coppers and have just started birchens as a side project. The flock was purchased from hatching eggs I picked up in CT. I could get a few chicks for you but I don't have any full sized hens to sell. I know Metella on here also has BCMs and might be closer. PM me if you are interested :)

Baunlee - I think you are closer - I am on the other side of Glens Falls by a good 1/2 hour.

I have 2 lav/splash Pure marans hens and some BCM hens - some mixed Marans hens (have all sorts of color in their genetics) and my roo is BCM .... so that is my parent mix .... all Pure Marans and from very good lines - but I don't concentrate on feather color - only egg production, color and feathered legs. That is what I love about the breed - that and dual purpose so I can eat the extra roos and have a full dinner.

I'll have 2 available Colo mix hens who are just now on the point of lay - that I can bring to the chickenstock if anyone is interested in purchasing them - I am not trying to sell them - they are just extra ... I am also hatching out as many as I can before chickenstock - so I'll some month old strait runs I HOPE !!!

We didn't make it to the Homestead Fair, but one of hubby's friends and Mo'ville classmates went to the Bee class. Not a good review, but she is already a beekeeper as well. For a good in-depth class, look to your local clubs. Several are hosting beginner classes right now. And Geneva Bee Conference is coming up on the 18th.
Hubby got in our hives when the temp got up to 70. Sadly, 5 of the 6 have perished. Only explanation would be not enough mite treatment. Treated only once in late fall, too little too late. Will treat this year before spring flow, during summer dearth and again in fall. Of course the surviving hive is the grumpy one.

I'm considering hives but will most likely look for a care taker. A % of the honey is where I'm looking to go. Anyone have thoughts on that arrangement ?
