NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm struggling with keeping my incubator at 40%. I keep adding water and humidifier in the room but it's still barely at 40. I'm nervous about getting to lock down day. Any ideas on how I'll be able to get the humidity even higher when time comes?

Have you checked the air cells? You want to make sure they get big enough so the chick has room to hatch. I usually incubate at 30%, letting it fall to 20%, then adding water to bring it back up to 30-35%. At lockdown I use those cheap little sponges and keep adding them until the humidity hits 70%. I also use a spray bottle and mist the eggs to bring up the humidity. I do everything wrong

That includes opening the incubator during lockdown to mist and add water to the sponges. Sometimes I go overboard and it is like a rainforest in there so I take out the viewing windows for a while to let some of the moisture out. Forgot it once overnight and still had a great hatch. Mama hen doesn't sit tight for "lockdown" and they do pretty well. I also open up to remove chicks when they are dry while the others are hatching.

Have you signed up for TSC ?   Ads?  I just got my coupon for $5 off $25 or $10 off $50. I'm not sure they send them to everyone but I shop there regularly. At least once a month.

Oh on Ebay there are "Harris"  metal feeders for $13.99 or there abouts. I was tempted but I have plastic ones and they serve me okay. I do have a couple of metal ones too. The ones on Ebay look a bit better quality though.

We are gunna try those no spill ones made out of PVC pipe

Blue Laced Red Wyandotte people,
does anyone have a BLRW roo? or expect to have one as the result of any hatches? I think horsekeeper, Tab, and BeauGarden
mentioned them but it was awhile ago and I'm not certain!

  • BLRW people getting eggs or chicks - do you have a website of where you are getting them from, so we can check it out?
  • Chicks = would they be straight run?
I have a nice BLRW roo that I hatched from eggs that I got from Tab. (I also have one that looks more black then blue). I was thinking about keeping him, but with way to many roosters, I'm sure that due to his size he would end up in the freezer eventually.. If you want him I could be persuaded to part with him. I hatched them out summer '16. They are really well mannered boys.. Better then the other jerks I have out there.

@Chicken girl 15 and @rancher hicks, thank you so much for the offers! I have a chick order coming in May, so I am hoping there may be a little boy in there somewhere. And there is always Chickenstock! No verdict on what happened to him though, there was a change in plans so I had to leave my house sooner than I thought and surprise surprise, something took the remains. The ladies all seem fine, so I am going with freak accident :)

@FishMtFarm I am out your way quiet a bit. I am about 2 hours northeast. I haven't been a huge silkie fan (no clue why, honestly), but yours are stunning!
