I have been pondering selling the seven birds out of my best layer coop 'to a good home' just because I have so many, but I doubt they'd be what you are looking for (hatchery) plus you are far from me as I recall, near syracuse, right?

I went over to East Chatham today and traded eating eggs for hatching eggs. Stonykill gave me 7 eggs....2 of them are BLUE or blue/green. VERY pretty. It is a breed that I don't have and don't know a lot about. Sumantras. He was very kind to fill me in on how to deal with them.

I put the eggs in the nest box, under the broody, in the DAYLIGHT. She is sooo broody she doesn't care one bit what time of day you give her the eggs, she justs wants to sit. And sit. And sit some more. HOWEVER she did get out of her nest about 4 pm for a short stroll and water. In the less than 1/2 hour she was gone *SOMEONE* got in the nest and laid an egg. Did I mark the hatching eggs like everyones says to do? Noooo....so now I have 8 eggs under one teeny tiny hen. She hatched 4 large eggs, so I'm sure she will do fine. But really, I should KNOW better and should have marked them before I took them out of the carton.

So in 21 days I will have chicks again. Just what I wanted. NOT!!!!

Anyone looking for Sumantra Roos? I'm sure I will have some and they are VERY pretty. Very showy.

Any questions on the Sumatra's, be sure to ask! When she gets up tomorrow mark those eggs! Good luck with the hatch! Those blueish Sumatra eggs from my girl "lil blue" always give me pretty or handsome blue to light blue chicks. But like I said, she has been hanging with a blue sumatra roo named "xman" and they did give me one splash. So you might just get lucky.

As for Sumatra roo's, I have one handsome black roo who I am looking to rehome cheaply. He is a good boy who got henpecked and had to be separated from his siblings.

Oh, I'm not waiting for her to get up. I lifted her to the edge of the box and marked the eggs with Ray's carpenter pencil, which was right outside the coop...as soon as I realized my mistake. Gotta love those sneaky hens. LOL

I am sooo looking forward to see what I get from the blue eggs. Blue is about the only color chicken I don't have. Well and wheaten....but I'm not overly thrilled with that color so I don't try to obtain it.

Got the second run done today. The chickens are TERRIFIED of it.

they sound like my Pekins. I change the litter in their run and they won't come out of their coop

. You could very well get blues from the other eggs, but most likely 80% of them will come out black. Seems to be the norm. Either way, Sumatra's are very pretty birds. And if raised in a run, seem to adapt to it well. Good luck and nice meeting you!

found 2 medium sized brown eggs today.... not sure if it is the blrw that I got from you Karen but she is filling out nicely. about the size of my rhode island red. I am not sure how big they get. dont know who else would be laying.... need to try to catch them in the act. LOL

but excited to get the new girls laying- waiting for the wellsummer and maran to start laying....

Went to auction in Sodus yesterday. Very odd, these fall auctions. I know a lot of it is people paring down the "herd" or "flock" for the winter. Some things went much higher than I expected, other much lower. One poor woman brought a miniature horse and it only brought $45, so she bought it back. It was a nice looking horse I would have expected to bring a couple hundred.
