NY chicken lover!!!!

I was using a 2 liter bottle with a regular chicken nipple in the cap but, it drips a lot when they drink causing the bedding to get very wet. So I just built a new one using a horizontal nipple. We'll see how that goes. As soon as I put it in they attacked it and the bedding under the nipple is still dry.
I have the cups but have never used them ..i probably should ..
for chicks I use a weighted Ceramic flower pot

Similar to what I give the adults the heated water dish is on a large weighted flower pot

You can also take a small dish and put rocks in it for weight ..and put the water in that ..
Or if you have a drippy waterer you can put a plate or dish under it so it drips on that

Had 13 eggs hatch on Saturday. 8 left in the incubator, but doubtful. The last chick to hatch only zipped halfway, then stopped for 12+ hours, so finished zipping the shell for it. It has what may be spradle leg. The legs and feet point directly out to each side, not even remotely forward facing. Tried the bandaid hobble, but more likely will need to put it down. Doesn't seem interested in food or water, just lays there and peeps loudly (like in pain).

Elmira ny here but just bought my first babies

Welcome, newcomers!

One of my hens was exceptionally loud this morning. I went out and two nest boxes had a hen each. There were 3 or 4 other places she could have gone to lay an egg, but instead she yelled. I cleaned out four nest boxes- scraped and added fresh straw/shavings. I think I solved her problem because she went in the coop and stopped yelling.

I have 18 hens and 5 favorite nest boxes and one nest box that they use some of the time. That should be enough, right? I'm considering building more, but haven't decided.

It is not unusual to have a hen screaming because someone is in the nest SHE wants'. I suspect it's really a nest she uses as always and so do the other girls and their cycles in synch. I keep wooden eggs in all the boxes hoping to coax them to use them all but they never do.

So WELCOME to all the newbies. Hope you enjoy it here.

FYI everyone else. AI has been found in Chattenooga county, GA. So be aware if you order chicks or eggs. Keep in mind other areas of the country that have been hit. Even hatching eggs can carry disease. Work on having a healthy bloodline.

This is why I keep a "closed flock" and hatch my own. It doesn't guarantee no health problems but decreases the odds.

Buying an incubator might be worth more than you know.

Both Tennessee and Georgia have confirmed cases. I haven't found solid information about whether this affects our flyway. I don't order chicks, usually. The eggs I have ordered are from sources outside of those states.

Instead of wooden eggs in nest boxes I use golf balls.
