NY chicken lover!!!!

I pulled the watering cups (tapped into gallon jug) out. They still havent figured them out. So i guess qe are back to what we had before but already had it filled with sand. Cant do the nipples cuz no way to hang. Going to find some wood to set up on in am. Otherwise....blah. Cant set it too high cuz i do have a runt. Shes maybe a quarter the size of the rest. Acts healthy eats and drinks fine. Ill post a pic in am of her compared to others.

Same here. We had to refill the cups for the chicks. And since I didn't have the regular water dishes cleaned, they have currently stolen one of the cats dishes.
Gramma - the chicks are too small, so they are drinking around the trigger.

When I said I give them grit, I meant I give them Oyster Shell grit. Is there anything else I might be able to give them in order to stop them from laying soft shell eggs?

If you're giving them layer and oyster shell they should be getting plenty of calcium, I very rarely feed oyster, usually not at all. Most good layer feed is enough. Young birds can sometimes lay a soft shell just cause they ain't got the timing right inside. Different varieties of stress also can cause soft eggs as well as being sick.

Tractor supply has feeder and waterer base that screw on to mason jars that is what i use the water the quart size jars last bout week.

Thank you for the advice. When I said I give them grit I was talking about Oyster shell grit. Is there anything else I might be able to give them?
It could be to many treats. Generally I don't give them oyster shell unless there is a problem. I might toss some in the food every now and then just to be on the safe side. While feed does have calcium other stuff we feed might decrease what they need for a balance diet. I sometimes get funny shaped eggs if I over do the bread. They will eat the treats before the feed, just like kids and candy.

Too newbies, FYI feed bags have a date. Check it. One store gave me old feed and I was not happy. If you suspect anything is off in the feed you buy such as color or smell don't be afraid to take it back. I once got feed that had gotten wet.

Too one store I saw they had fan blowing on the feed. I had gotten wet feed from that store so I stopped buying feed from them. I did notice we don't get their sale ads anymore, nor do I get their emails.

I went to help my girlfriend at the feed store she works at today. Nobody warned me the new shipment of chicks are coming in. I took 7 of them and I'm not sure if I'm happy about it or regret. I only took them because one was crippled and I felt bad for it, I doubt it will survive. All pullets and being that she works there I got a reasonable discount as well as free chick starter. Still hoping to find some really nice ameraucanas in the upcoming months but I'm not gonna get worried if I can't get them. That's what these chicks are. I am not set up at all for them so they're in a small aquarium that might be big enough for them for a week. Better get to construction that new coop this weekend...

If my hatch goes well I'll have Wheaten Ameraucanas or Lavender Ameraucanas soon. I'm still waiting on Splash Ameraucana eggs, but they should arrive in time too.

So we have had a strange raccoon wandering the neighborhood in the mornings totally disoriented not afraid of cars etc. well it decided to camp out behind our garage this morning out in the open.... we ended up calling the local PD they sent an officer after some convincing she did put it out of its misery (appeared to have distemper symptoms) but then she just left it here for us to dispose of so bizarre...? IMO sick wild animals are a danger to ppl and domestic animals as well and isn't there a protocol for animal control or the DNR to be called in? I'm asking idk...?

We had a dead deer in our yard one day. We called around and the transportation dept was going to come pick it up if we left it by the road. Well, it was dark out so we planed to drag it to the road the next morning but coyotes took care of most of it during the night. You could try calling the town for advice.
