Stony!
Will you have eating eggs during the winter that you would sell? I do not want to buy them in the store and would rather support another BYCer! Besides your not that far away.

hard to say. My old girls don't much in the winter. My younger ones may. If I do I'll let you know. Last winter we got only enough for us and my parents.

I had enough last winter with 3 fresh buckeyes. Maybe my 2 pullets will come into lay and keep me in enough eggs for the winter. Let me know if you do have extras.

I froze eggs to see if it could be done and then used for baking. Well, it can. I froze them in ziploc bags (from the dollar store) I made brownies and you could not tell the eggs were frozen. I did totally thaw them before putting them in the brownie mix. The bag said that it had 4 small eggs in it (or 2 reg sized eggs) but with the part that didn't exit the bag it was the right amount for brownie mix.

Now I have bags with 6 - 7 eggs in them for scrambled eggs this winter. And bags with the right amount for brownie mixes (1 egg called for) and cake mixes (2 eggs called for)

PS I crack the eggs into a cup and pour them into the ziploc so the bags are flat, when frozen, and therefore thaw faster.

will do. I'm expecting my young girls to start laying as winter hits. So I'll see then how they like the cold, short days.

Well I have heard of freezing eggs in ice cube trays, but haven't done it.

Now I have another problem. Is anyone having a problem with broody hens? I mean hens going broody?

I have not had one this summer but now have two. One is a Delaware and I hate to pull her eggs since I don't want to upset her. The thing is what will I do with her chicks? I know I will work to raise them if no one will buy them. I'm not up to giving chicks away.

I also have friz who wants to brood but I don't want to give her eggs. The only eggs I have that would be pure are the Dels. All my orp hens are to young to hatch eggs from anyhow. This is such an inconvenient time of year.

I have had request for hens but so far no one willing to pay my price. I just can't see selling new laying hens for $5. That's ridiculous. Chicks cost that much. I don't understand what people are thinking. Feed prices are up. Don't folks have any idea of what it costs to raise a chick to laying age? Heck my orp chicks cost that much and the lavenders were $20 a piece. Looks like I won't be using my incubator much next year. Though I do hope to hatch replacements for myself.

Now the new BYpoultry mag has an article on keeping chickens in winter. Anyone read it? The author is in VA , so I wonder how much of what he wrote I can use here? I certainly can't leave the front of my coops open like he does.

Stony - you do know that Dels are good winter layers right? They're my best winter layers.

I've had 14 broody hens this year. I didn't consider it a problem however

My broody Sumatra's gave me over 40 new birds.

I have read that about Dels. I don't have any of them.

I don't have a "problem" with broodies....I kinda like them....but this time of year? I have a D'uccle sitting on 7 eggs right now and am wondering the same thing...."what am I going to do with the chicks?" She's gonna raise them, cuz I'm not bringing them into a closed up house this time of year. I hope they feather out FAST, cuz it's gonna be cold by the time they hatch the last Sunday in October. I actually have my fingers crossed that my hatch rate is LOW....how's that for convuluted thinking? I'd be happy with 3 hatching...2 girls and a boy. But I know my luck (which has been historically good) and I'll have 6 of 7 hatch. Move over girls. Make space for the little ones to roost up there and keep warm.

I had my best broody "mama" hatch last fall in the same timeframe as yours is sitting. They were fine. It isn't any different than my girls sitting on eggs in the end of February to hatch in march. The mama's bring their little ones out in the snow. Broody babies are much tougher than incubated chicks

x2. my broody has five two week old chicks with her this morning out on the lawn and it was about 35F. They seem fine, doing all normal chick stuff. I don't know what I'll do with the chicks, but I'll see how many boys I end up with, I guess. Not really room for any more birdies, so might just sell the whole lot when they can be away from mom.
