NY chicken lover!!!!

I too have chicks hatching by broodies. Yesterday I found a chick in the run that was under a hen but she didn't seem concerned when I moved her. I put the chick down but no one came to claim it so I moved it to the broody hoop coop. I'll let them grow out as they're EE's. At least some of them.

Now I've got some straight combed barred chicks. Some with feathered legs. Only my marans have feathered legs so I have no idea how or why that happened. They had to have come from green eggs. Not many Marans eggs hatched.

I've posted to CL but got no takers for the roosters, so I'm not sure what I will do at this point. I too have the BO's and Silkies. The BO's are all pullets. I've been tossing eggs too.

I'll be pulling all eggs from broodies in the Del coop. There is an EE in the duck/ee coop with five eggs that seem viable. I left them hoping for more lavender EE's and marans.

The ducks seem happy but are noisy. Still can't sex them yet. Perhaps if I pick each up and listen to them quack I can tell.

How do folks take care of their ducks in the winter?
I'll have a covered run but they wreck the waterers.

our 1st Chick from our flock hatched ..Candy is a new mommy ..its Her 1st baby .she is doing great .all ready has it out ..digging through the bedding in the coop . I would keep her in there with them all ..as she seems fine with everyone ...except the baby needs baby food not layer..View attachment 1046622

B : Is that the Spitz you got from me Gramma?
Yes she is ..and she can be a fierce little mamma ..
I grabbed her chick to show the mailman and she followed me and tried to attack me ..
So I tried to catch her and bit the dust ..chick still in hand of Course !
( I had Flip flops on which probably didnt help )
So after eating my pride ..I picked her up to show them both ..
She settled down ..The Mailman says " shes awful big for a baby "
I said "thats the mama I had to bring her too .."
Then showed him the baby in my hand and handed it to him .
He wondering " is she going to attack me ? "
"You should be alright" Which he was

Hi Everyone, congrats on chicks to those who are hatching.

My newest additions are now 12 weeks old, and growing well. They are lively and inquisitive, enjoy time in their pen on the lawn, or inside the plastic net fencing every evening, watching the bigger chickens free ranging. Just getting the hang of catching some of the mosquitos and other flying bugs that are around - although I have witnessed a few clumsy tumbles when they are so focused on what they are chasing they run straight into things! We have had some really hot (high 80's) and humid weather over the last week, which they seemed to tolerate well, hanging out in the shady parts of their pen, and didn't seem at all concerned by the house shaking thunderstorms overhead either.

I was looking for some advice on recommended dewormers for chicks this age, something I could find at Tractor Supply etc. I have not actually seen any worms, but I have been noticing occasional blood in their stool.

Thanks,

That's funny!! :) The chamois Spitz I have disappeared for several days and then kept coming back so I followed her. She had a nest tucked into the lilies. She finally gave up on hatching and returned home last night!

GRAMMA -Before you medicate them ...it is probably not worms .. or Coccidiosis
Are there any other symptoms ?
are they on medicated feed ?
More than likely they have just lost their stomach lining which is normal for chicks

Things you can do to naturally strengthen their immune system .
apple cider with mother in their water -
Oregano oil or leaves

Thanks Gramma - yes, i think that shed intestine is what I'm seeing, thanks for the link to the poop chart, I've seen that in the past, but had forgotten about it. They are on Dumor food from Tractor Supply, currently mixing last of the bag of chick crumb with the next one, grower / finisher. In the evenings they are out on the grass, when they're in their enclosed run during the day I put in a handful of weeds I'm pulling up from the veg garden (plantain, dandelion leaves, chickweed etc) - and we only use compost, no chemicals.

No other symptoms, lively and inquisitive, eating and drinking, showing interest in the older birds. I'll pick up some new apple cider vinegar tomorrow, don't think the version we have has ''mother' in it. Do you just add a few drops?

Thanks for your suggestions
