NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi newbies. :welcome

ALL Folks: Man this rain is killing me. The ducks are loving it though. Too much too do, but must do it in the rain or it won't get done, huh? Not liking my job anymore. That was probably the shortest "honeymoon" for a job. 6 months. They've changed the bosses like they used to do at the P. O. Stupidest thing ever.

Lots of chickens this year. More than in the past. I've still got broodies on eggs. Just one each for three of them. They've not done good in that coop. I've got an EE in the Duck/EE coop on six. She's not being bothered by other hens who want to lay. Having non broodies who want to lay getting in with setting hens creates a mess. I've marked the broody eggs. Still eggs get broken.

How do you deal with broody hens? Moving them may cause them to break, leaving eggs. Though I suppose you only need one or two to hatch next years layers.

I've found "Homestead Rescue" on cable and that is interesting. One thing about living off the grid is you have to be willing to work. It is interesting for sure. I'm past the age to start such a venture.

TTFN,

Rancher, hates getting old, Hicks.

Ha! So chickens hate change or something new! One of the escapee rabbits decided to have her kits on the floor of the hen house...you would have thought murder was being committed  They finally settled down and went to bed grumbling quietly. This morning - not a peep out of ant of them...guess they have gotten used to the rabbits:bun...

Hey there 'neighbors' from Barker and South of Buffalo, welcome, I'm in your part of the State, Wales, NY nr East Aurora. Currently have 5 chickens, 3 adults in the main coop, and 2 x 12 week olds in another pen, an Easter Egger and Red Sexlink, who sometimes forget how to find the way into their ark when it gets dark. I found them sleeping in the dust bath at 11pm last night! This is within their main pen, and behind plastic fencing, so safe, but not a good spot if it rains in the night!

My EE rooster squawks like crazy when they girls go off after laying and egg and drives me crazy. Tonight I had a duck that got trapped in the garden. She (hopefully) was going nuts.

I am having a time of it with the Silkies not going in too. I have to pick them up sometimes if they won't go in. They're young and afraid of the older birds.

I have found chickens on the windshield of the car, on top of the roof of the c and tucked under the steps. One night I thought I'd lost two EE's and found then huddles next to the house behind a bench with Big Delores. They'd got trapped in a separate part of the yard. Glad your are okay.

Can you add more nesting boxes ? I use enclosed kitty litter boxes for my broodys once the babies hatch ..they could be used for layers too
I leave the broodys till the eggs hatch then I move them into them ..
This was earlier this year
Also our nesting boxes are in our first coop ..so I can push them down and add 2 more nests on the floor if I need to

Hi everyone! I finally found my way back to NY thread. I'm hoping a member lives close by me, I live in Morris which is Otsego County, NY so I can have some sort of assistance later on. I think I have to unband somewheres around 20+ hens and 1 rooster. I also have a hen that I need to clean a leg wound on.
