NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey guys I haven't been on in forever! Is anyone interested in some seabrights? Since my last posting I have lost many birds and grown a healthy sized flock. I have learned that having 30 chicks hatch doesn't mean 30 hens lol. If anyone interested in a barred rock rooster or some crosses let me know. Also have 3 gorgeous seabrights roosters and a hen is like to part ways with

Hi all, I don't seem to get alerts on this new and improved set up either........

Little update from Wales, NY - been busy in the veg garden - despite some early destruction when the deer leapt over our 6 ft high, 5 strand electric fence and decimated the chard, peppers, bush beans and squash plants - our tomatoes did really well, have literally been harvesting them by the bucketload, spent several long days washing, baking and squashing through the sieve, and now have 22 tupperwares of tomato sauce in the freezer for pasta and slow cooker recipes this winter.

In construction news, my husband designed and built a chicken tractor over the summer, currently housing our 3 adult chickens, we move it every night while they are out free ranging, plan being to keep them in it for another month or two, depending on the temperature, moving into the veg garden when we have finished harvesting stuff, so they can work the soil for us. They love hanging out under the mini shade roof in the run, which was a late addition to the almost finished build. Over the winter they'll go back to the regular insulated coop near the house, which is several feet up off the ground, and which can snowblow a path to when the weather is bad.

One of my adults, 'Honey' is having a massive molt, was literally 1/2 naked in 1 day, still losing some feathers, and has the porcupine spike look in other places where the new ones are already growing back in, all the chickens are enjoying dust bathing - been checking regularly, but no signs of mites or lice.

Finally - very excited to let you folks know, that we have some new 'little girls'. You may remember since May my attempt to add some younger pullets was an epic fail, with one of the first pair of pullets actually being a roo, and the replacement pullet becoming sick and dying. The Red Sexlink from the original pair has been here since May, we named her 'Ginger'. For a while there she was very lonely, and I had a tough time finding chicks of a similar age. However, thanks to another NY group member, we found some suitable companions, and after we both drove a few hours for a handover at a Wegmans store in the Finger Lakes, Easter Eggers 'Lady Di' & 'Dove' arrived. They spent a little time in quarantine, and now these 3 are a lovely little mini flock. Here's when they first all started sharing a pen

Now Ginger is 26 weeks, and getting nice red comb and wattles, which I hope means she will start laying soon. The EE pair are 15 weeks, Lady Di has some lovely poufy cheeks, while Dove has remained smooth faced.

They are living in the main coop, but free range every night with the 3 adult birds. Sadly it turns out that 'Honey' is a real bully, chases them around and panics the little ones almost daily. Previously when I was trying to introduce 'Ginger' when she was a single chick, 'Honey' saw the 'look but don't touch' dog crate in their run as a challenge, and spent a lot of her time stabbing her beak through the bars, pacing up and down beside, or, throwing herself at the crate. When we tried to free range them together when Ginger was smaller, 'Honey' stomped her into the dirt and repeatedly pecked her face till her comb bled. She then spent a week in 'time out' in a separate pen, but is still a bully. So, 'Ginger' is still terrified of her, and if Honey walks towards her she panics, flaps, runs away squalking. I'm hoping things calm down as they spend more and more time together, as we want them to be sharing 1 coop when winter comes, if not we may have to think about culling Honey from the flock, something we've never done before, but witnessing her attack 'Ginger' so viciously, when the other 2 adult birds pretty much ignored and accepted her, I think I'd be OK with it.

The younger chickens enjoy the dust bath too, although hard to get a clear pic with them all wriggling and flapping so much

Rancher - jobs I save for winter, well a top tip for fall that I picked up here, I think from Gma chick, is to start raking up and saving those dry leaves and pine needles to bag up and use for winter bedding, apart from that finish picking our homegrown produce and canning or freezing it before the cold weather comes.

Sorry, this turned out to be very long - realizing it's been a busy summer!!!

If you rehome her she will most likely not be that way in another flock .
When there is not a Rooster ..sometimes a hen takes that dominate spot ..
Want a Rooster ? LOL ?

Nice Update

The show today was a blast, and I came home with several new additions. Here are two of them:

They are so cute. I was thinking of going to the show but the nice weather kept me home to get stuff done. I am going to try to attend the Yankee Fall Classic in Syracuse on the 8th. I need to find some pet bantam pullets/hens (preferably D'uccle), my silkie rooster is coming of age and of the 12 I am only seeing 3 pullets so far.

Thanks! Maybe I'l have to check that show out too. I mean, I shouldn't, lol, because I know I'll spend more money, but it would be fun!

I don't think you'll have trouble finding bantams at the show. There were tons for sale at this one, just not of the particular breed I was looking for. But there were lots of silkies and d'uccles.

Darn, now I wish I would have went. I did set up my temporary run and coop up for quarantine because I got some large fowl pullets locally but when I got them home I noticed the one was making a growling sound when it breathed and had bubbles coming out of its eyes (still don't know how I missed it when I was at the farm) so I drove them right back. Maybe I will have luck in Syracuse. At least the quarantine is set up and ready to go if I do.
