NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all! :frow

I've been "missing the action" for awhile now. Like 113 "unread" posts. Not going to try catching up. Hope everyone has been ok.

A friend near me is trying to sell her young birchen Marans rooster and hen pair & I thought someone on here, perhaps @rancher hicks was looking for one a few months ago. So, I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone is interested. If so, contact either me or @Hilly78 - Chenango County.

I went through a major downsizing this past month, as the last few year's accumilation of "chicken math" had escalated to a point it was hard to have time for the animals plus regular responsibilities. I sold my ducks & over 70 chickens (including young pullets). While I still have a big flock, it's easier to manage now. I have a bunch of roosters & a few meat chickens left to process, but I'm considering taking them to a processor, just to get it done all at once.

I am of course, but I've been busy with work and DW. Chenango County is quite a ways, I'm not sure how I'd get down there or when. I'm working six days this week. Days off are spent taking DW to her appointments. I am tired.

SO, I've been busy and tired. However I dropped in to offer information about tomatoes. Since winter is fast approaching and there have been frosts, what to do with those green tomatoes. DON'T waste them. You can of course fry them up but how many can you eat? I do have recipes for green tomatoes relish too. Anyhow, pick them all and wash them in hot water and a bleach solution, OR I used vinegar. Rinse. Wash them picking off stems and dry them on cookie racks. THEN I put them in a box just the right size that fits the cookie racks. I put the greenest on the bottom. Then on the second rack more green but (and this is important) an apple. (Any kind will do I suppose). Then a third rack with those that are a bit more ripe and another apple. That was all that would fit. On top of that row I put a sheet of tissue paper, closed the box and put it in the back room which is dark and cool this time of year. I'll check them every couple of days or so. They won't taste as good as vine ripe but they'll be usable. You can of course freeze or can them if you wish, but at least they won't have gone to waste. Choose only those tomatoes with out blemish of course. Have a nice day folks hope this helps someone.

Green tomatoes? Green tomato casserole is awesome!!
A lot of recipes online. This is the one we use except we add parmesan to the top, like it with saltines, can use ritz or bread crumbs. Ours ends up multi layer not two as in this recipe. Some recipes have onion some not.

It's pretty much just slice up a bunch of green tomatoes (five, eight, depends on how big they are and how big you want it) into a one and a half to two quart or 9x13 casserole dish, thin to 1/4 inch, and dust with sugar (optional) layer with chopped onion, salt and pepper, garlic powder, cajun seasoning (optional) a couple cups of shredded sharp cheese sprinkle divided between layers (most recipes don't include the cheese but it's goood), ours has around four levels of maters I think, two or seven all good.
Top with a sleeve of saltine crackers (or ritz or bread crumbs)(couple cups) drizzle a stick (or less) of melted butter all over the top, we also add some grated parm last. Some add parm in the layers, most just put a few tabs of butter on top.
Bake 400 degrees for 45 minutes or until bubbly covered and then 15 more uncovered or until crispy on top :drool

We just started our coop a couple of months ago, we have 3 chickens. We are outside Syracuse NY. Would love to find others in the area who have backyard chickens.
