NY chicken lover!!!!

I have to decide if I want to close up some of the coop today ..
Ive got frozen water ....frozen fermented food .
I can add the heaters for them..I may just do that
I just wasnt prepared for this ...so early .:hit
Ive got a Sex Crazed Young Cockerel ..
My full Spitz ..Mr Big...Thats all he thinks of . 20171106_155022.jpg
My hens run from him ...as he is not their husband ..Cowboy is ..
Anyone Want him ?
I came home after dark to close them up
Hens were hiding in the hen house coz they dont want to roost next to him ..
I think there were 5 hens last night and Cutie my other Spitz too .
He lost his place as 2 Roo to mister Big ...he is now 3rd Roo
I chased them all out ...and put Mr big in the baby pen by himself ..
He really needs his own flock .
Cowboy needs to be more protective of his hens ..

Lucky my 1st Roo wouldnt have let any of the young ones mate with his hens .
He wasnt mean he would just chase them and they would run as fast as they could 20150624_184700.jpg

They may have not went in because they were already sick .
With chickens sometimes it is hard to tell ..as they hide symptoms real well
I have found that sick birds dont act normal ..
They dont roost ...they dont come in the coop at night..
They are easily chased by others

Oh no, when I say sick, they were hypothermic, not like sick with illness. Called the vet, they had me take temps before I brought them down and they were low. Vet said get them in the shower with warm water to get temps up the quickest. Gave me some home therapy to do to save me an emergency visit. I'm way up north and it got stupid cold. They were not ready for this extreme flux in temp that we got. So better to lock everyone in together for warmth. That's what the vet recommended til they adjust a bit better.

I had a older Pullet spend the night outside ..last night ...She seems okay ..she found a warm place to roost ..She greeted me this morning ...glad it was a predator free night

Sounds like they didnt know how to keep warm ...or find a warmer spot
This nasty Weather surprised alot of us ...including Chickens ..
A good reason to count your chickens before you close the coop ...
A chicken left out makes me... make sure everyone is back in... the next night

I don't close my coop. I leave their little door open into their run just incase they need to get out. I think the others are right and they just didn't how. I'm going to the coop after dark now and putting them in.

Went to lock everyone up tonight and 3 silkies are all cuddled up under the coop. It’s mostly enclosed under there and i could only reach one so i left them. Didn’t want to take too much body heat away from them. I hope they’re ok in the morning. Can’t wait till the big coop is done and i don’t have to worry!

They will be ok. Not suppose to be as cold tonight.
