NY chicken lover!!!!

I hate to go and may not if I can't afford to, but the cold is killing me. I just wish my son had bought a place with more land. He's young and not as ambitious as me in that area. I'm wrestling with giving up chickens but Lord have mercy three good months is not enough. Springs are cold and wet, falls are cold and wet. I need some dry for a longer period of time.

Rancher

I lived in a "warm" climate for 5 years....I missed the changing seasons, and hated the heat....
If the cold is really a problem, giving up the chickens is not so bad...just think...no more frozen water, below zero winds when you're trying to go from pen to pen...need I go further? LOL
You could have another hobby that doesn't involve live things that you have to feed & take care of...like painting...or pottery.

That is my goal...I alread do jewelry, and I realize that I will not always want to have chicks to care for...but I"m grooming my grandchildren...

The cold is a problem for my body. The cold and damp make me hurt.

this is not chicken related, but it is NY related. Main ST Valatie is having a street/vendors fair today, 11am to 5 pm. All items from vendors are MADE IN THE USA! I'll be there with some of my handbuilt furniture. Stop by, say hi, and do some christmas shopping early, and buy 100% American made products! Plus I'd like to meet more of you!

Good Morning to all!

Rancher, I just came back from Las Vegas...you can't beat the sun and warmth, but they all said the heat is too hot sometimes..wasn't the 5 days we were there..but everyone we spoke with all wanted to come to NY and see the sites...we said it had been rainy...I can't imagine not having the chickens of course it took me too many years to finally get the ok from DH, but now!

Maybe next year will be better and you will be sorry you didn't stick around to see.. visiting is nice to the warm places, of course with five kids that was the first time in 11 yrs for us..be another 11 again... Hope you can make the right choice! Good Luck..geezh what will Trish and Renee do with out you?!

Did I see someone in the Eastern part of the state was rehomeing some Olive layers? I had a lot of reading to do and may have misread...

Raining here, put going out to clear out the lawn of misc. things...kids are going to love me!

Grooming the grandkids...Well Sue is it working...I some times have trouble with the kids~

Has anyone seen the law they hope to pass dealing with Changes to Child Labor Regulations on the Farms? Check in out you can make public comments until Nov. 1 at www.regulations.gov. My daughter has worked on a farm since she was 14 and loves it, she milks in a parlor, if this passes she will have to quit and work?! Mcdonalds or someplace that will not give her the experience she is looking for..We wish we owned a farm...I am not positive but it my even change 4H and FFA kids.. Thanks

I went out today to rake the run, tidy up the coop a bit, and hang with the chickens. It's the first chance I've had for any extended chicken-time in about a week thanks to work, so I haven't had the opportunity to watch for signs of pullets gearing up to lay until today. It turns out that love (or at least point-of-lay) is in the air. I now have pullets throwing themselves to the ground in front of me like they're lovestruck groupies and I'm Mick Jagger, yet I STILL have but one solitary layer.

Crazy things.

I have one more hen laying - a little Red Star. Nice dark brown eggs. Altogether there are now two layers out of 29 birds.
lol.png

Of course, they are mostly young pullets.

The red star started out with medium sized eggs. Big eggs for a beginner.

Now for the rest of 'em.

Henicillin and Happy--I feel your pain except its my silkies I am waiting on. My hens are doing okay but I think the weather is messing with them. One day I get 1 egg then the next day I get 8 (out of 8) then the next day I get 5 and so on and so forth. Its okay as my customers understand.

I am still waiting for my silkie girls to lay. They are 7 mos old and still show no interest in either laying or the boys. The boys have made tentative overtures but the girls ignore them.

This is worse than when I was waiting for my pullets to lay.

I have to say that I am glad it is only 3 pullets I am waiting on and not 29!

Finally got the coops tidyed and the runs done and got to spend quality time with my cheeps. Getting dark too early now. Hope everyone is ready for winter!

Not ready for winter!

Wish I was one of those very prepared people, but work and life always get in the way.

Always seems to come together one way or another tho - not sure how.

Madsenaccord: Glad you have some layers - I know silkies take longer to lay, but if those were your only birds it would truely be torture to have no eggs after 7 months. Hope your girls lay soon.

Why is it dark out already?? Sigh......time to close the coop door. Chickies all had pumpkin for the first time today - they really loved it. I'm amazed they could walk around with crops that full.

Not liking the cold and rain today - thought is was supposed to be dry?
I guess the weather doesn't really listen to the news.

...Where is the dislike button for the weather.....

The first thing that came to mind when you said you were amazed they could walk after all the pumpkin, was hens doing endo's (like a wheelie but down in front and up in the back) Goofy I know, maybe it's rain-a-sitis delerium.

Today the barn needed new shingles, check. Tenant house needed the storm windows on, check. DD needed a skirt made for Civil war day, check. Enchiladas for dinner and floors mopped. I am done in! Tomorrow, clean the coop. Totally do not mind that though, it'll take a few hours to really do a good job but it looks so nice when I'm done. Not sure what to do about our ducks though. Their run is muddy and well, smells a bit.

Thought about pea stones. Any experience?
