NY chicken lover!!!!

Well weather says may be light wet snow thursday. Lord have mercy.

I heard peeping in the coop tonight. Eight eggs. thing is Buckwheat was sitting on them and not the hen who has mainly been there. I didn't move her cuz I've been under the weather and busy. I will have to check early to take any new chicks. Heaven knows what I will do with them.

Still considering going south and getting rid of everyone. DW says to drive the van and that might mean taking some girls with me but I'm most likely not going. I really need to feel more comfortable about it and need the Lords approval. How could I leave DW? The two shall be one flesh. I say this for my benefit to remind myself of what the word says about a husband and wifes relationship.

Well take care everyone,

Rancher

Silk long johns under your regular long johns will keep you warm, Rancher. Might help with the aching the weather causes, too. Silk is thinner and less binding so it can be worn all day without the usual "wrinkles" of regular long johns. Now you know what to answer when people ask "what do you want for Christmas".

Remember, Rancher, hunters know cold. I think you will find many hunting clothes multifunctional and well suited for the rigors of farm work. We would hate to lose you to the warmer climes. Hope you are feeling better real soon!

Ok. Here's an odd one. 2 of my roosters were crowing at 8:30 PM. What's with that? I went down there and everyone was on the roost and quiet. Then they crowed again when I was walking back up to the house. That's NEVER happened before. Silly roosters.

My silkie rooster Mumbles crows when he sees me. He wants my attention (as he was handraised for the first 2 mos of his life as an only hatch). He crows when I leave and sometimes screams when I leave to go back in the house. Weird huh?

Cooler weather is nice for working outside. I have been bagging leaves and pine needles for use in the runs during the winter. We are getting peak color now here in the Hudson Valley. My hens are enjoying the cooler weather and growing in their new feathers nicely. I gave them my leftover chicken leg last night and they were enjoying it. I was trying to clandestinely eat some grapes while sitting next to them watching them. Next thing I know, Flow hops up into my lap and is looking at my grape I was eating. I asked her if she needed something and she bawked at me, looking at my grape. That was it. I ended up getting 10 grapes and the girls got the rest. Bunch of raptors!

Sigh---still waiting on the silkie girls to lay.

I was over in the Eastern part and down state parts yesterday...I saw chickens in various places and wondered ...are they on BYC?

Lost a pheasant yesterday. We (DS and I) were moving some of the pheasants to new pens and I opened the top of the shelter (silly me). One of my Lady Amherst cockerels was roosting and took off out the top. A chase ensued, but no luck. By evening, I could hear him in the corn field behind us trying to serenade his lady (who, thanks to him, now has a new suitor). I got a couple of good suggestions from the pheasant section, so I am a little more hopeful that I "might" get him back.

We're heeeeere! And - we're slowly getting used to the cold. It's like 20 degrees cooler at night than what we're used to! I haven't had this much hot chocolate since I was a kid. The chickens are miserable - living in our old meat chicken tractor. There are no nest boxes and it's simply on the ground. We have to try and build them a new coop asap. There's just so much to do. Moving isn't fun, but we're glad to be here. This is the view from our driveway!

My dbf has already broken out the long johns.
