NY chicken lover!!!!

So my hens have not been laying as many eggs lately and I was wondering why. I looked under the tractor today and it looks like a chicken exploded under there. I guess they are molting! That explains the downturn in egg production! Went to the feed store and dropped a pretty penny for layer feed and gamebird feed. The gamebird feed should last a while since only 5 silkies will be eating it.

I am in the process of figuring out a new feeder for the silkies as the chick feeder is too small and they just knock it over and make a mess. I am thinking of a plastic folgers coffee can as a holder but am not sure what to have it drop into. I have lots of coffee cans. Any ideas?

Do you need a roo? I have a wonderful roo, sincerely. I love him, but he is NOT the Dominate roo and is miserable here at my coop.

You said you lost an EE roo. This guy is an OE roo, so his offspring will have either the brown egg gene or the Blue egg gene. Sounds like you could make EE with him. He is really a really nice roo, just needs a chance to be Dominant.

I would love to have him go to a good home not a stock pot. I'm pretty sure he was vaccinated against Merek's when he was a chick. I saw his Dad and he was a very beautiful roo. Very calm and sweet. My guy is a little flighty right now, with the Dom roo chasing him off all the time, but his genetics is to be calm.

I would be glad to meet you half way if you want him.

CM is Country Max. They have a sale every year at the end of summer. So if your not done planting this year or plan to plant next year dig your holes in the summer and get ready.

As for the vaccine, does that carry over to chicks hatched from Vaccinated birds? I am sorry about the orps. What color were they? I don't mind folks coming to my place. Just not into the coops. My yard is fenced and so the chickens can be seen running around the yard. I've plans to put benches in so folks can sit and be hypnotized like I am when I'm out there.

Marq - I know if I wait they will get cheaper but someone has to be first and since I'm a nice guy I figure their just chickens and the Bible says to share what you have with others. ( I taught Sunday School

) I did see trios of Lemons on rarebreedsauction but really have my eye on the reds and the Birchen Marans. I can afford the Marans and the Swedish Flower hens which I like too, but want to make sure I have the coop done and all that.

Cass,

Thank you so much for your offer.

I have no area to quarrentine this time of year. I will definately have to wait till spring to add to my coops.

Rancher,

The vaccine will not make the chicks from hatching eggs immune in any way, but some flocks have worked through the Merecks and the remaining birds in the flock have an immunity to it. In this case a chick from a hatching egg from that flock may have immunity to the disease. This may be why the EE hens from the Beekman Farm did so well. (Washed everything after that trip too including disinfecting the eggs before putting them under my broody hen. All three hatched. Whoot Whoot! Of course still waiting for eggs from that group.....they hatched on Mothers day...C'mon girls

Yes, we went and met Farmer John and Jason. They showed us the cats, the goats and then the chickens. They had a really nice Ameraucana Roo. We ended up with 3 hatching eggs. Then we went to the Black Cat Cafe. It was soooooooo yummy. It was a great trip. We did not meet Josh or Brent. I think they were in the City that day.

Edited to fix a typo

Here's a pic of one of the pumpkins we carved. My girls had fun and so did the chickens.

We had a canada goose show up at work just outside the door headed to the cooler tonight. It spent all shift out there without moving much. I went out and checked it. I'm pretty sure it has a broken leg because it's swollen right above the right foot. I didn't want to leave it to die, so it is now down on my pond with the ducks and I'll have to check on it in the morning. I thought that the company might have had it disposed of to eliminate the risk of contamination getting into the plant being the goose was in a newly constructed and high traffic area. I never expected to end up with a goose.

How do you know if you have merecks or not? Can you have your birds tested? Just curious.

Yes, the state will test suspect birds. I did not have my birds tested, but they had all the symptoms and after they died I found cancers in the Orps bodies. Looked pretty classic, but it is not confirmed by the state.
