that is too cheap. I get $3 a dz wholesale to a "green" market. I can't even imagine what they charge for them

Stony, I have to go to Chatham tomorrow.....Do you have eggs that I can buy?
Ginny

not today. Most of my girls are molting right now. Looks like several chickens exploded around here. Only my girls born this year are laying, the Sumatra pullets. So not now, but thanks for asking!

I had a three-egg morning, and I'm ridiculously thrilled about it.

The Doms and Orps are all laying now, so I have a regular if low supply of two (and now three) per day. My youngest girls (late June babies) are now checking out the boxes, although I'm sure that only the sole Leghorn is serious about it.

What beautiful weather today! Can we keep it?

My roo, Jessie, pecked the cat today. He was just checking things out. He discovered she isn't a chicken, she's a scaredy cat.

I got some advice from an egg producing person yesterday. He said if you can, insulate your coop do it. If you can't, then put plastic around it to stop any drafts coming through.
Today, I wrapped one side of my barn in plastic on the inside. I was surprized, that even though it was not cold today, the side we did was on the west and it was morning, so the sun hadn't hit that side yet, and hanging the plastic over the sides, made a big difference in the inside temperature and how it felt.

I hope this works.....

Nice egg in your avatar!!!!!!

Thanks, I got quite a few nice dark Marans eggs last spring, so I'm growing up all the chicks that hatched from those eggs...I hope they lay as dark as the egg they hatched from and using only roosters from the dark eggs as well.

Is it a Marans egg? I have one cuckoo Marans and her eggs are not dark at all!!I guess because she is a hatchery bird. She is a nice bird, though!

Becareful with the plastic. You don't want the humidity to get to high. Chickens can do quite well with the cold. Read the latest issue of BY Poultry. Drafts you want to block but if it gets to warm then the humidity will go up and that's when you get respiratory problems. Especially if you use the deep litter method. That litter contains quite a bit of moisture.

I hope we all survive the winter,

Rancher
