Hope everyone is muddling through this terrible weather alright. I can look out my window right now and watch the snow fall. I feel bad because I can't let the babies out at the moment. They had a blast outside last week during those three or four days when it was so warm. We were in the 70*'s, so I figured it was OK for them to play outside for a while. The first couple of times they came down the ramp was just too funny. Reminded me of when you put booties on a dog. But after a while, they were running up and down it like champs.
By the way, what does ALBC stand for? Is it like 4H or FFA?

snow? ewwwww, none here yet, but they are sayin it might. I know, I too have had to leave the babies in and mama is upset that the other chickens are going out without her. I just hope the frozen water wont be back until winter

rcenter--thanks for the invite, DH didnt get home till after 5pm today and batavia is 45 minutes away from me so we couldn't go tonight. We went out to eat in Dansville tonight (10 min. away) and of DH MADE me go into tsc there!! I walked out without a SINGLE fuzzy butt!

They actually had a pretty decent selection (Phil---what did geneseo have?) Dansville had cornish rock, white pekin ducks, bantams (3 kinds!), black australorps, a variety tub of straight run hens, amberlinks, and golden comets. (Rachel--what did Batavia have?) I am so proud of myself! I was getting the "shakes" walking out but I did it!

My chicks come in another month or so............

p.s. I've had my maran hens seperated for almost a month now, am putting the maran roo with them sunday, how long before the new eggs are fertile again? Anyone else in the area want some? Phil gets first dibs along with some of my guinea (hopefully), turkey and blue/green eggs!

p.p.s. If you guys live in the country, I CANNOT recommend guineas enough! I would've never known the fox was there yesterday if they hadn't YELLED and SCREAMED and actually started to line up a defensive front and advanced on the fox!!!!

Well, the seminar was interesting, but the speaker seemed more occupied with cornish X and raising poultry for meat and it seemed that most people there were not interested in that at all. He covered the basics of feeding and watering, but spent way too much time getting off topic (about meat bird processing). Seeing as how he said he is the only one in the area that does the processing it seemed a little self serving for him. 2 hours later, I left cause I wasn't getting any more useful info for my birds. I even asked him about local vets and he almost laughed in my face, him being the kinda guy who just culls if 1 is sick. I would like to have guidance for antibiotic treatments and what not since mine are pets and never dinner.
So, anyhow...I was late to the seminar and didn't get to ask anyone what kind of chicks they had. The signs said...Golden comets, amber links, cornish X and ducks (idk what kind...not a duck gal here), they had a bantam bin, labeled assorted. It looked like they were mostly polish cause they all had the little head tufts. I was thinking about getting some bantam chicks, but I had a feeling that the folks there were not gonna be too helpful in identifying the breeds in there and I don't want to buy a straight run cause I already have a broody hen with a "straight run" and I am afraid I will end up with all roo's. Love the roo's, but can't have more roos than hens. After watching that seminar I wanted to get up and talk myself to the people that wanted to know about raising layers, even though I am not an expert, I could've done a better job. oh well, I did learn that it is a good idea to put vitamins in for my chicks and am gonna do that in a minute. I'm in the Finger Lakes near Canandaigua Lake. Nice to see all the local folks!

I've had good luck with the Eastview Vet in Penn Yan. I know that's quite a hike from LeRoy but they do treat chickens and helped me with my Agatha when she had a bad inner ear infection.

I'd like to make it to the Bath auction this year but. can't. come. home. with. anything.

I took one of my roos to the Williamson Animal Hospital when I thought he had a broken leg. Turned out he had pulled his sciatic nerve and the wonderful vet there gave him a shot of cortisone and never once suggested that I cull him or batted an eyelash that I wanted her to treat a chicken. In fact half the staff came in to meet Mr. Opal and fawned all over him telling me what a georgous bird he is. He is now good as new. I now take all my animals there.

There is an avian vet just south of Rochester in the suburbs by John Holtz Honda. I didn't call him for the chicken because of the distance but perhaps they'd do chickens as well as other pet birds.

Folks thought I was a little unusual to bring my chicken in but when everyone saw how lovely and sweet Agatha was they understood a bit.

I stopped at the agway in Hemlock and they had a variety of chicks. Speckled sussex, black star, rocks and a few others that I can't remember. TSC in geneseo has cornish rocks, barred rock, comets and leghorns. Managed to leave both without any more chicks although the sussex were calling me!

I am planing to get eggs from Amy so I just need to be patient .

I had pretty much given up on the few eggs I tossed under a broody silkie but I saw yesterday that she was motherin three babies. Kinda cool cause this is the first time I have let a broody hen hatch eggs.
