NY chicken lover!!!!

My 16 Silkies had 3 eggs for us today. AND our eggs are small. We sell them (when we have extra) for $1.00 a dozen. It is COLD here too.

Well the girls in the hoop coop survived last night's temps. I gave all the birds a hot breakfast of milk, cream corn and bread this morning. When I closed them up last night the temp inside was 20*. The temp inside the coop read 18/19*. I'm not sure which is better. The coop has more birds too.

Well take care,

Rancher

still no takers for the pair of white orps and I'll be darned if I take them to the auction to "give" them away. Kings is just to far and I'd save more if I just culled them. Plus the Lav. roo. Can't even give them away around here.

It wasn't even warm enough this morning to be called "freezing" 7* ??? Did winter finally decide to show it's frozen head?

HOWEVER one of my hens was singing the egg song when I got in the car this morning and 4 others decided to lay throughout the day. FIVE!!! Count them 1...2...3...5...5 EGGS TODAY.

That's the most I have ever had....which also means one more chicken has decided it's old enough to lay. And one itty bitty egg...YEAH!!!!

That's one of the D'uccles finally starting to lay again. Last egg I had from them was in SEPTEMBER!!!

No blue eggs yet, but I KNOW they will be there sooooon!!!

Rancher: Can't belive no one would want the white orps. Crazy, craziness. We are still taking a breath from our run with Mereks. Everyone is happy and healthy and laying eggs. One of the red stars even ran across the pen in the snow this morning when she saw us walking down the driveway. Must have thought we had treats. Silly girl.

Chooks did well in the cold even though we have no heat in the coop. Did not even have to close the front doors all the way, but we did close them most of the way at night. There is more than 12 hours between morning and night chores at our house. We have generally got one or two frozen and cracked eggs, but the rest are usually fine. (and in the nest boxes)
We bring out warm water morning and night and I put snuggle disc's under a waterer in each coop in the morning to keep it open longer. At night we just hang out in the coops until they are done drinking and talk about our day. Just came in a few min ago from tonights chores.

Our one Ameraucana finally laid a medium sized blue egg. It was her first one. My DS asked me to make an omlett with it this morning, so I did. And here I thought she was gonna be nothing but eye candy in my yard.

Haven't decided on chooks for the spring. Wanting barred ee's and jahourns, but I don't have room for many more and they must be vaccinated prior to coming here. Where there is a will, there is a way though.

Glad to hear everyone's chickens handled the weather so well. It is so much fun when they start laying eggs again.

Oh yeah....I sell eggs to my friends for $2.00 a dozen for a mix of large and xtra large. Family eats all the other sizes.

Maybe that price needs to go up this summer. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Have a great night everyone!

Well the girls must have liked the warm breakfast cuz I got 13 eggs today. Not bad for 30 birds. To be fair some of the Dels are over two as is Buckwheat my frizzle. I don't think she or Frenchy have laid an egg in a while.

I have tried CL but just get a bunch of spam. No serious people. Same with my offer of chicks. I can't afford to hatch more than my replacements. Of course If I give birds away takers come out of the wood work.

Well got a move on,

Rancher

Hi guys! Is anyone planning on going to the NEPC show in W Springfield, Mass on Jan 14?
We will have a BYC table there, it would be great to meet some of you peeps!
Here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=7855613#p7855613
I
am looking for some more volunteers to help out, please PM me if you can.
Nifty-Chicken has OKed a 6-month GFM for every hour at the table!
We will just be handing out freebies, bumper stickers, keychains, tattoos, and spreading the word about BYC.
It's not going to be work.
Try to stay warm, Roberta

well I had a nice surprise this am. Besides the norm of a few early chicken eggs, 1 of the pekins decided she needed to start up again! I wasn't expecting anything from those girls for another month.

Okay...I informed the ladies that everyone elses girls were laying eggs and told them they better get on board soon cause I hate buying inferior eggs. They just gave me the stink eye and demanded breakfast. sigh...I can only hope they start again soon. I havent found anyone around here yet that has extras. I know the local food co-op just put out an inquirey about buying eggs from local flock raisers to sell at the co-op. I told the girls about this as well. Have to get busy with the new coop so we can expand the flock.

Rancher--if you werent so far away and my coop was finished, I would take your orps. I need to win the lottery so I can build more coops!

Aria--my silkie girls are 8 mos old now. When are they going to start laying???

They dont squat yet, my silkie rooster has made no attempts (that I know of) to mount them, and basically all they do is eat, beg me for treats and to be let out and look cute. At this rate, the people who have asked me for their chicks wont be getting any this spring

.

So we have moved out of the deep freeze into just freezer weather. My dd is going back to ga on saturday to college and its going to be in the 60's down there. She is mightyly dissappointed that she got no eggs while she was home but will enjoy the warmth of ga. The silkies used their mind control techniques on her and she is now a fan of the breed. I will miss her very much. Unlike chickens, I do not like this empty nester thing. Hmmm, I wonder if I can use that as an excuse to get more chickens???
