NY chicken lover!!!!

What does Superior Farm breed or sell..sorry new to this!?
sad.png

I think they were a pretty popular hatchery? I recall seeing they had gotten their stock from top breeders? I think there was a thread about Superior Farms on the hatchery section of the boards? Not sure if they had stuff besides chickens...

Going to have my eyes peeled for good quality Ameraucanas and Cochins, I need a few layers here until some of my chicks grow up!

Is that the one in Bridgeport? The last one I went to was okay... I have an "issue" with the auctioneers though, READ what I write on the darn box! How HARD is that???

I think there is a tailgate sale/auction in Batavia next week? I probably won't need anything else since all my "extras" are going this weekend, and I'm buying at the Chickenstock in PA the week after.

I swear I am going to hatch in Dec this year so I'll have spring pullets to sell, be a royal pain though, my husband is complaining now about the amount of stuff down in my basement!

I started hatching in February. I can't see the point in waiting if you are set up for chicks and have a place to keep them warm. On the plus side they start laying in the early part of summer. You'd get 2or 3 months laying. Unfortunately most people who buy chicks are not set up for them. Some don't decide to get them until the urge strikes them and have no idea what they have to do.

As far as Batavia, why the heck haven't they advertised? How can I plan for this thing when I don't know until the last minute?

As far as the Bridgeport auction, I'm not sure the help knows how to read or cares. In fact I dropped of a CM roo and haven't gotten my money. I asked Obie to keep it for me, since his family and us have been friends for years. What a mistake that was.

Haven't heard anything about a PA chicken stock either.

Hi everyone,

I'm in Rochester and very new to the idea of raising back yard chickens (I've been looking into it for some months now and have decided I'm going to give it a try (I'm thinking I may be walking into an addiction?!). I just called for the rules/regs and permit application today for my city chickens. That should come some time next week.

I have been checking out various coop designs online and we will be starting on a coop soon. (Can't wait!) We also just need to complete the fencing toward the front part of the back yard too to ensure at least that the bigger predators will stay out of the yard. We want to have all our ducks in a row (pun intended) before getting some baby chicks (probably next spring?) with everything ready for them to have a happy home!

As far as coop construction, I have been reading about protecting from predators... How far down to most chicken owners bury the hardware cloth into the soil to protect the coop & enclosed/covered run? And is it necessary to do a full buried floor of hardward cloth or is just the buried skirting usually enough to keep the hens safe? Not sure if a full floor might be overkill or might it really be necessary? I'm in the city, fenced in yard - but my street does dead-end into a wooded park.

Thanks for any helpful hints!

Yes, it's an adiction, lol
We're going to Bath tomorrow. I'll keep an eye open for any announcments. My Husband has already got a plan "B". If it turns out to be a bust, well, we will be going right by the casino.

Maybe I can win enough to order some chicks.
A tailgate sale in Batavia? Are there alot of those sort of things around?

yes chickens are VERY addicting!!!

Omani--have fun for me tomorrow!!!! The only thing I REALLY still want are some buff orpington chicks, for some reason that's what the foxes LOVE to eat in my neck of the woods and they are my FAVE!

Phil-if you go to the auction tomorrow and see some cheap buff orpington hens/poults/chicks, I'll trade you for however many Bourbon Red turkey (from dear auntie hee hee) and guinea eggs you want! The guinea eggs are definitely fertile now, I cracked one open that a broody hen kicked out of her nest and it was starting to develop (yuck!)

Everyone else---after I shot the second fox last week what happened? Well two stray dogs attacked! GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! DH says I'll have to shoot them if they come back, not sure if I will be able to though. We thought they killed our last turkey, there was feathers and blood EVERYWHERE and they got a few of my fave bantams, the turkey I found the next day hiding in the woods, injured but Ok. everyone is now permanently confined to the fenced in area and we have 3 guns loaded and ready to go
