NY chicken lover!!!!

I went down to the coop to do a night check on the cheeps, and had to turf one of my Orps out of a nest box. She was acting like a broody-wannabe late last year, and evidently is going into mama mode again. I also found her hanging around in a nest box yesterday, and amused myself briefly by putting eggs next to her and watching her carefully tuck them under herself while chirping to them. I'll have to set up a spot for her and give her some mutt eggs to sit on, just to see if my roosters are actually competent.

I also found a ratchafratchin' deer mouse when I grabbed an old screen out of the storage/playroom side of the coop (duckie cover - it fits perfectly over their new and improved digs). The blasted thing was clinging to the screen and staring at me. Time to get a few traps.

We had thunder and lightning about a half-hour ago - love it!

I enjoyed the storm too! It was just enough, not to close or violent.

Anyone close to watertown? I am in the military and just came back from deployment. I am looking to start a small flock with my children. I am have a little troble finding chicks, other than the farm supply. I would like some BO's, sussex, RIW, silkies, or any breeds that are good with children. thanks

How many total are you looking for?

I just got a Sussex hen in trade so since your military and if your down this way let me know and you can have her. She's laying age. No sikies but some orp crosses. ( not sure what color the dads were, but they are all orp. Might be a lavender or two in there) eggs in the incubator due on the 20 and I'll give you some of those too.. I raise Dels mainly and have some hens I can give you a couple if you want. I have some Del eggs in the incubator too and some EE's. I do have a pair of BO's but haven't separated them to them selves yet. Still working on the coops.

Just let me know.

19 of 25 out and 2 pips, although I think the 19 might be it. I got up this morning to 106.5 I am thinking that I might just have to toss the LG and get a second Hova bator for a hatcher.

Eggs should be arriving on Friday. 24 Jersey Giant Eggs, hopefully good Giants. The Ones I got last year are smaller then my Orps with bad type.

Enjoy yet another Beautiful day.

GREAT! I hear of others having issues with the LG. I don't. I made a 3/4 inch plywood box, minus a top 2 inches larger than the LG. The LG goes in this box. The box is the same height as the LG. I surround the bottom of the LG with styrofome peanuts. The plywood stops drafts, and the insulation. Mine works quite well.

wtg2320 I would like to say, THANK YOU for your service to this country...God bless you and keep you and yours safe!!!

Since I'm 2 minutes from him, I will join in this also...if you're interested, I've got 5 going on 2 week old silver laced wyandotte/delaware crosses...both breeds are friendly and the chicks are growing great and are huge! They should make a fantastic dual purpose bird..as both breeds already are dual purpose..lol!

I have 2 LG's both with turners and fans, use reptile hygrometers and thermometers..separately. I had troubles until I finally broke down and put them in my unused spare bedroom and turned on a space heater and pulled down the shades. I just had a hatch that was nearly 95 percent...would've been more, but I think I had some duck eggs in there...unknown to me and to the person who gave me the eggs as he lets all his poultry run together. I just wanted the eggs for a test hatch so I could make sure I had a better hatching environment...seemed to work! I have rir and wyandotte eggs I ordered and all but a few clears are developing nicely...I'm soo excited and so happy to have figured out a way to make these bators work. I daresay however, I would've had the same problems no matter which bator I was using. Maybe I'm crazy, but I now believe you've got to have the right spot...or if you don't then do like you've done and build the box to help it out!!

Welcome and Thank you for risking your life for us. I'm displaced from Ithaca. Someone here will be able to hook you up (see it is an addiction). You'll learn soon enough. Welcome again and Thank You. Be safe

Yes, the easter hatch is this Saturday!!! Everyone go join up that wants to set eggs!! =) =) I am hatching again and I really shouldn't, but unless disaster strikes my flock I am shutting the bators down after that. Hopefully I won't end up with 20+ broodies as well to deal with.
