Well, you gotta do your best, but its part and parcel of the whole livestock experiance. I lost the *best* Cochin hen I had to a Hawk, he killed her, in the pen, and she was too heavy for him to lift out! If you let them out for any yard time, you can loose them.

Don't use plastic fencing. I have to replace all my pens because it was cheaper and easier to work with, won't keep out a thing.

Also on my list is electric fencing, but that won't stop a Hawk, so I had to roof some of the pens (to keep Hawks out and chickens IN)

Everything wants to eat chickens! Mink are really hard to catch, a friend of mine lost 18 bunnies so far to one, I keep telling her, she NEEDS a leg trap. I've had a few stray dogs here and there, nothing that wanted to eat the livestock though. One lost hunting Beagle last month came wandering out of my garage! Now, the neighbors cats are on my list...

Most of the predators seem to be on a game trail? Like they would hit me, then a week later come back. I joked about putting the Possums heads up on spikes as a warning, but I figured not everyone would have my odd sense of humor! We killed a bunch of those last year (Possums are stupid and easy to kill) My dog got skunked (twice) Plus the Fox, the Hawk and the Mink. Its a wonder that anything made it thru last year alive here!

Most of my losses were in daylight hours, or early morning, go figure. They just waited until the chickens were up I guess?

On the flip side, I have no Rats. I think the Mink ate them all, and moved onto my ducks/chickens when it ran out of rats...

We live in a big open space with not much ground cover for predators. I had no issues until I got chickens. A local farmer said last year was bad, that the predators were bold and desperate. They come right up to the house, security light and dog doesn't deter them!

Hello.....And A Great Big Welcome To BYC And The "NY Chicken Lover" Thread!!!!!!
What part of LI are you from?!?! I myself hail from Queens/Nassua County area.......My family moved up here "to the country" way back in 1971. I was born in Queens Village, lived in Floral Park, have friends and relatives in Bayside, Mineola, Bellerose and Patchogue. I haven't visited "the city" in several years now......my large flock keeps me home most of the time.
Wow.....you're 13 and have 28 chickens.......I think that's fantastic!!! What breeds do you have??! I wish I had started raising chickens many years ago......I love them!!!! I only started my adventure with the chickens last Spring/Summer when I bought hatching eggs online. A year later I have quite a few.....need to do a "head count "again(smile).

Just got off the phone with a neighbor 2 miles away. He has electric fence/netting. Something got in his fencing last night and killed 3 birds, tried to drag them out. Found them at the egde of the fencing but left them there. Maybe got shocked.

Grrrr!

Hello happyhensny!!!!
The chain link dog kennel are also what I use....along with dog exercise pend as breeding pens for the ducks(who can't fly out of them). You still have to worry about the weasels/mink squeezing right through the fence openings.....they can "flatten" their bodies to fit through even the tiniest holes or openings. It happened to me when I still didn't know any better....learned the hard way. And ,if not covered with wire or a wooden roof, owls and hawks are a constant threat to your birds........found out about that one too the hard way. Just trying to save you(and everyone else on this thread ) some of the heartache I went through during those early years!!!!

Bath was on the 8th, do you mean the one at Pine Creek in Lyons? That was on the 1st...

I went to the Bath auction, it was awsome!

Sorry, I got my dates missed up, it was the 8th. I was there to pick up my son from my ex-in laws, my ex fil bought my 4 yr old a pair of banty's, they are silve, green and purple, I told him he would have to keep them until the coop was finished and my chicks were a little bigger, but they are gorgous. I will post pics of them when I get them to our house.

Hi six little chicks!!!
I'm guessing you have pretty much the same predators in your area as do most of us in the tri-state region.........foxes, raccoons,weasels/mink, opposums, owls, hawks, skunks, coyotes, fischers, domestic cats and dogs. It seems everything out there wants to feast on chickens and ducks. Another word of advice..........use hardware cloth or other heavier fencing........the chicken wire is easily chewed through by racoons and other predators. The outer, most vulnerable perimter of your enclosure should be something sturdier than chicken wire.......the chicken wire can be used for any other dividing applications within that structure.

As far as predators go beware of fox, I do my best to educate that foxes are called crepuscular hunters....2 hours surrounding sun up and sundown. don't free range during those hours unless you are sitting with them. otherwise, most other predators are night time sneaks. Lock them in the coop at night, with NO holes, close windows unless they are double fenced over. And then there are neighborhood dogs and cats. oh boy!

Hi Little Six Chicks
welcome-byc.gif

We went to the Bath auction. BIG mistake, lol. I only brought home some S/L wyandotte chicks, but I could have brought back two truckloads of critters. We wound up being around Batavia last Saturday, so we stopped by to see what was up. It was over before 12:30pm. I was so disappointed. I don't know if it's always that short or not. After reading all the regulations for sellers (must be cleanly and humanely caged, no signs of disease or parasites, must have names on containers, health certificates, etc.) I was expecting more. At least more than three hours worth.
As for predators; we have been lucky. We get foxes, hawks, owls, skunks(just ask the dog), and coyotes, but none have bothered the chickens. But then again, they don't free range. We built their runs and coop to keep predators out from the start. I suppose that the two dogs help deter alot of the ground based varmits as well.
