I usually only want to drive an hour or two. I'm having issues finding a Buff Drake though, so I guess to get something I really NEED I would drive 8-10 hours one way?

I do alot of rabbit shows and go out of state (This year PA, OH and MN in Nov) so I try to coordinate with those trips too.

There are a bunch of breeds I would like, but I would have to build another coop. I don't think my husband would like it... Now if I was bringing in a decent income from stuff, then I think he would be fine with it. I'm just stuck, I need a better incubator so I can hatch more so I can sell more, but I need to hatch more to buy the incubator!

There was a Sportsman at the Batavia auction, it went for 320 I think, which was about 220 more than I had to spend!

where was the batavia auction at? what did people buy? I'm up to my ears in chicks right now, my bantam hen has 10 chicks she's caring for on the porch in a cage, I still have 3 regular size hens in the coop hatching out about 34 eggs and then to top it off, my chicks came in today from Murray McMurray! Help! I need more chicken tractors built or some rabbit hutches!

I *know*, does BYC sell sweatshirts? We need to start wearing stuff so we know each other.

I've been spring cleaning here. Wow, it takes a LONG time to clean up after winter! Plus they poo right behind you!

Ummm, I *think* I know who you mean, does his name start with the letter *J*? Did you happen to see how they housed their rabbits? I was avoiding him and his *friend* since we had words (okay, email words) after they killed one of my bucks and then had the nerve to blame me! Long story... My impression is that they are hoarders. I refused to sell them anything ever again. Banned them from my property. They had the nerve to say I should give them stuff for free rather than sell or eat it, that I didn't *love* my stuff since I sold/ate it.

So I was kinda hiding there with sunglasses on and my hood up. None of my male friends could go and I wanted someone to protect me from the crazy people...

how is it that when I took dear auntie her 18 chicks that arrived today from Murray McMurray.....she sent me home with 16??? She CLAIMS that the 4 turkey poults are from my bronze/bourbon red eggs I gave her to hatch out...OK I will admit they are mine...but did I REALLY give her another dozen chicken eggs to hatch for me? what was I thinking??????

I have about 40 chicks now on the porch (10 or so under a bantam mommy) and the rest are in my clawfoot tub brooder.....then outside in the coop I have another 30 under hens and probably 9 cornish rock that cannot be butchered soon enough in a chicken tractor...then another dozen poults out there too that I got for nothing at TSC! AHHHHHHHHH what happened????? Every year the numbers multiply!!!!! Thats like 90 chicks!!! Well...minus the cornish who will be filling my freezer that leaved about 80...then if half turn out to be roosters they will head for freezer camp too.....so see that's not too bad then right? RIGHT? looking for a little support here folks!

Me thinks I might need to post an ad on craigslist and sells some of my furry mutt butts that are due to hatch soon. I did call a friend whose D-I-L wants chicks and she is going to come get 8 on saturday for 2.00$ each........I told her they might end up being green or blue eggs layers and they wanted to know if you could still eat the eggs....

my mottled bantam cochins are the craziest looking chicks I have EVER seen! They are bright yellow with black spots.....the free chick I got is a TINY bantam white chick that ZOOMS around...no clue what he'll end up being!

LOL I have the whole chicks chicks everywheres thing going on too!

I suppose its a *good* thing I stink at hatching, since where on earth would I have put three incubators full of chicks?

Omgoodness....I am so with you...I just got some more eggs to go in the incubator and thinking that isn't enough! I need to list what I have...my DH just tells everyone he builds it I fill it! I grow up in WNY, now I live in CNY. I waited 20 yrs to get chickens again...luckily I have a sister who enjoys some of my over run!.... I just sold some beautiful blue layers to a friend and she lost all 18 to a fox plus the few she had left from her old flock..these were from my 1st hatch so they were 3 almost 4mos old! I cried and thought of the person on here who is fighting a fox! I wish you luck with your ad!

Awww, I had a Fox wipe out my Black Silkies last year. Well, almost all of them, then Hawks and a Mink got the last couple. I locked up the white Silkies, and the Buffs have been fine in their pen.

I do have a couple that free range with my Frizzled Silkie Roo, I *did* have him locked up too, but he was a real crab butt when he was caged! He lost all his hens last year.

Fox are like impossible to catch, or that was my experiance, by the time I would see it, and run out with a gun that may or may not work (Did I mention I killed two Possums this year, one with a shovel, one with an ax?) I had to get a leg trap to get the Mink. After it ate both of my Buff Drakes.

You can just tell your husband that in order to set up a proper breeding pen, you need to start with 50 chicks. Since you'll kill some of them (whoops) some will be Roos, and then predators will pick some off. The you hope that you have enough decent hens left to make up your pen. If I had known all this, I would have ordered chicks last year instead of eggs, and I would have ordered twice what I did!
