NY chicken lover!!!!

sorry amy...it was at the batavia fairgrounds, I think officially called the genesee county fairgrounds on route 5 just east of the city of batavia. I will get info in the mail on any upcoming auctions they are gonna hold and I will pass it on. Good thing you have had your chickens all locked up. We still haven't got our fox, makes me feel stupid, but that thing is too smart. I don't even see it around much anymore, but I know it's here somewhere. The local gun shop is getting some traps for us.

What do you guys think about Vet Rx? any good or a waste of time?

Yes, you guys, the wheaton ameraucana is not up to the standard. She has whitish brown legs-not slate colored, but lays a minty/blue green egg. The only thing wrong with this bird is her leg color.

This is a picture of the wheaten pullet's identical "twin". The wheaten I'm talking about looks exactly like this one.

I wasn't picking on you, just didn't know and was too lazy to go look.

I do wonder if you put her with a Roo with better leg color, if she would "make better" than she is, or if those chicks would carry it resessively? Some of the colors do need more work that others, so if she had good type, you might want to fix it. Or not, I'd ask one of the Ameraucana Gurus like Jean what they thought. You'd have to fix the egg color too though, so it would probably be easier to buy a better one, LOL What color legs are they going to do on the Lav Wheatons?

Yes you can clean up the leg color but it will take a couple generations of selective breeding and there is always a chance it will show up somewhere down the line. Lavender Wheatens will have slate legs.

Hello Everyone!!!!!
Here are a few pics of my newest chicks.....bantam Cochins(possibly Frizzled) and an EE chick born yesterday and today. More of this group is due to hatch this weekend. Hope you enjoy the pics!!!! It ain't easy getting them to sit still for more than a second or two.........my method: Click constantly......and Delete like heck.
Karin J., so sorry to hear that you lost 2 chicks. I was hoping you'd find them hiding somewhere. My heart goes out to your daughter........time is a healer....and hopefully there won't be any more losses for a LONG LONG time.
Rcentner, I've used VetRX for over 6 years now. I know for a fact it saved several ducks over the years .who had developed severe colds. It's most effective when the ailment is caught early on. I always keep a small bottle(of VetRX, that is....smile)around. It's also effective on Scaly Leg And Eye Worm.
In case I don't get a chance to post another message before-hand, I truly hope all of you going to the "PA Chickenstock" this Sunday have a wonderful time!!! It really sounds like a lot of FUN!!!!! I hope you'll give us a report and post lots of pics when you get back!!!! Maybe next year I'll get to attend!!!
Enjoy the beautiful weather that's supposed to be around for the weekend!!!!
Kathy

I never thought you were picking on me!

I was just trying to make it clear, sometimes I just don't feel like I have the right words to say what I mean. Know what I mean? lol

Hello all,

I am (very soon will be) new to rasing chickens. I had NO IDEA time could travel so SLOWLY until I ordered my first baby chicks.

(1 Barred Plymoth rock, 1 golden laced wyandotte, and 1 rhode island red) 3 more weeks until they come... I can barely stand it. Baby chick supplies on hand and ready for chick use!!

So, in the meantime I've been spending time reading posts (as well as storey's guide to rasising chickens), trying to soak up as much wisdom as possible from all of you.

My husband and I are in the city of Rochester with a good sized lot (plenty of room for the 3 'kids' to roam, scratch, and play in once they feather out.). We have been searching and comparing different coop designs online and will be constructing a coop and covered run for the chcikens to have safe space to roam when we are not home.

I am also dying to get that project started.

Luckily my husband is very supportive in my chicken adventure and being a contractor is helping with the design and creative layout to have something both functional for the chickens, functional for us as caregivers, and nice for guests and the neighbors to see. I'll post some during and after pictures once we have the final lay out and start construction. (It's only fair to share, since I learned so much from what other people have shared!) Thank you!!

This weekend though - trying to get the garden in. (Bought some extra tomato plants to put in this year as I've been reading that they can be a fun treat for chickens.)

Are there many of you on this site from the Rochester area - other local city folks?

Can't wait to have pictures to share! Thank you all for the words of wisdom and the stories!!

~Amy
