NY chicken lover!!!!

I have been out of town and was reading the posts. I bought food grade DE at the agway in hemlock NY. It was cheaper than anything I saw online or elsewhere. I think it was $25.00 for 50 lbs but don't quote me on that.

The guineas I hatched from Amy (tajmahalcoop) are doing great. I am encouraging my kids to handle them as the last time I had guineas they were very wild! One had a splayed leg that I used my tie wrap trick on and it seems to be fine now. In the past I have done this with chicks with a bad leg and they might grow up with a limp but this guinea seems to be running around as well as his siblings. I don't know if the splay leg thing is common or not. I have had it happen a few times and suspect it might be related to temp or humidity during incubation? Luckily it has only been a few times and I have hatched hundreds but if I could avoid it I would!

Great pictures, Rachel! The hen with all the babies... do you know what breed she is? Looks alot like my Lola who was sold to be as a bantan mutt.

Can someone tell me a little more about gunieas? Are they really loud and kinda mean? I think that's what I was told, but also that they eat mosquitos. That would be nice!

Wish everyone could have seen my backyard today. The kids filled up an old sandbox with water and were sitting in it. I looked away for a minute and when I looked back there were six chickens drinking out of it. I ran to get my camera, but I was laughing so hard I scared them all away. Good night, everyone.

Hi all,

So the garden is in, with my extra tomato plants for the chickens. A lot of work today - but it was a perfect day to get everything in! Getting fencing tomorrow to keep the chickens from using the garden as their own personal salad bar.

(Not to mention, being so close to the park, we tend the have bunnies hopping through at night that may also want to make off with the veggies!

Sachasmom - You mentioned you work at Strong? I work at URMC too - in the Cancer center.

That's pretty funny. Seems you can't throw a stone (or an e-mail or chat post!)without hitting someone that works there!

Thanks everyone for being so welcoming!!

OOps- sorry read so many posts - I seem to have mixed up some facts!,

That was thetajmahalcoop (Amy W.) that works at Strong, not Sachasmom. Sorry for the mis-managed memory!

One of my three silkies that hatched has a foot problem- I don't know how to fix it! I finally caught the 3 chicks & mama & put them in the private pen. She's not too happy with me!

Karin - she is a mutt breed of some sort, the funny thing is I bought her at the state fair last year and would have thought she was a breed of some sort, but in all my research I found no breeds that she fits to a tee. I was thinking maybe welsummer, but I think she either has the wrong leg or egg color. so mutt she is I guess. would love to see a pic of your gal.

Amy - have fun in florida!

have a good day all!

Cydney, you rock!! Awesome, thank you so much-I used to buy feed there when I was working at the race stables at the fair, so I know right where it is!
