NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi Amy!

I'm in Bloomfield, so kinda near Rochester, if you drive for a bit that is!

As far as Tomatoes go, you'll need to fence your garden in if you'd like the chickens to leave any tomatoes for you! My husband fenced his garden in, I'm waiting for the chickens to learn that if they fly up over the fence they'll find tasty yummies! I have to close the gate behind me or they will get in there are start pecking at them!

Anyone know if there is a lettuce green or some other type green that chickens like? I'd like to plant a row for the penned stuff this year.

Sadly, chickens don't much like Zuchinni... I kept trying to get them to eat the extras (there were many of them!)

Hi Amy! I wondered where you were at! I remembered your first post on here!!! So excited for you! U are going to just fall in love with your babies!!! I'm sooo jealous your DH is a contractor! I always have to sweet talk my construction worker cousin to come do those things for me! (thank you dear auntie for raising such a handy son!)
I'm an hour south of you, next to Letchworth state park but work at Strong. If you end up wanting more chickies, let me know I am up to my ears in babies right now! make sure you post pics of your coop, I love looking at others peoples designs!

Welcome, Amy! I'm about half an hour east of Rochester in Wayne county. Can't wait to see pics of your coop and your new babies.

chickens will eat just about any green, including lettuce, spinach, cabbage, kale, and an assortment of vegetables. watermelon, cantalope, zuchini, and yellow squash , butternut squash. I just wouldn't get carried away.

I usually plant Collards, Kale and Black Seeded Simpson for the rabbits. The Borage didn't make it last year though.

My chickens just did not like the Zuchini though, even if I split it open for them! Now if we only had a few, they would scale the fence and eat them!

mine will eat certain foods one day and then get sick of them. last year I gave them pumpkin, the 1st day they went nuts for it but on day 2 they decided it wasn't any good and I had to remove it from the run. (it was a new pumpkin, not "leftovers"). Also, never liked iceburg lettuce until last week when I gave them a bunch and they ate it right up! but mine are spoiled. I told everyone I work with that they like stale bread, moldless and they started giving me all sorts of stuff, like the italian bread that is only good for a few days then gets real hard.

amy...I would love to meet you at the next auction. Even though it sounds that the last thing you need is more birds! lol

my chicks are all getting so big, one of them is almost as big as my phoenix hen already. It will be nice to integrate them into the flock when they are old enough. I also cant believe how they all changed color so drastically. I will have one real neat lookin roo, phoenix-partridge rock mix. But I think I came out with a 50/50 ratio, 8 chicks and I think 4 roo's. maybe 3 roo's but likely 4. I heard them attempt to crow for the 1st time the other day, it was soooo cute! I laughed all day about the noises they were makin.

hope y'all are ready for summer cause here it comes!

rcenter-you are soooooo right! I do not need anymore birds!!! I ALMOST put some more pretty eggs under the broodies but stopped myself! I counted 3 weeks out and figured I will be sooooo sick of chicks by then!!!!

my one lone guinea baby is doing great, I've decided to let the broddy mama keep him with the bantam babies as maybe it will make him more friendly and less "crazy" then my adult guineas. I do hope some more hatch out as I don't want him to be the only guinea baby.

take care everyone! I'm really busy with college right now and work, going to FL this next weekend to visit my sister for the holiday weekend. Luckily dear aunties other son is coming to chick sit, good thing he teaches officers in the navy how to use guns, as gun skills are definitely needed at my house while we are gone to keep up with the foxes!
