Hello Sachasmom and MissCluck!!!!
I use the Hovabator 1588(Genesis) also. Knock on wood I've had great luck with this model......even with shipped duck eggs, which can be very tricky to hatch. With duck eggs, monitoring the humidity levels is CRITICALLY important!!! The air cells must enlarge at the proper rate.....or the ducklings tend to drown in the excess fluid when they attempt to pip. Lately I've been using very little water in the bator....just a few tablespoons at a time........it's been working pretty well.
Sachasmom, before you throw out any eggs please be sure to candle them carefully!!!! On average duck eggs take 28 days.....give or take a few either way. I always let them stay in the bator at least 5 days extra(as long as they're not filled with liquidy black goo....smile). During the last few days of incubation it's really difficult for the embryos to move around....it's getting very cramped in there!!! Several that I was sure were dead, ended up hatching....I was so surprised!!!
Thank goodness I don't have to rely on my egg/chick/duckling sales to pay the bills....I'd be in deep crap(smile). I simply love what I do...and maybe one day I'll actually "break even"....but I'm not holding my breath.
Kathy
