NY chicken lover!!!!

I'll tell the only people who will be eggcited for my find other than my wife. we went to a neighbors tagsale yesterday and found an antique egg basket with 13 ceramic eggs for $15. Considering I see ceramic eggs for $2 each plus shipping I think I did pretty well! All the eggs are in their appropriate nest boxes already, and the egg basket is filling up from today's collection. Retired my wicker basket.....

I didn't do anything, but you're welcome, regardless. And I'm with you on total economic collapse....and hope that it is only THAT...but am working on getting ready for a really bad blizzard first and total collapse next.

blizzard could be 6 months away. Economic collapse could be this summer. Probably a year or 2 away, but you never know.

Happy Easter and happy hatching, everyone!

I'm counting on at least 6 months to get ready for "the future". Right now I feel that there is enough here to sustain my "family" for 3 months. Well, except for coffee for Ray, but Aldi's has some I am going to get soon. After 3 months, I am hungry. But my chickens are part of my prepping....eggs and meat...and why I needed to get a couple of broodies in my flock. I am hoping that some of the ones I got from you will turn out to be good broodies too....would like to have 4 - 5 good mommas in my flock....right now I only have 2 and one of them isn't cooperating at the moment.

These are the creme and brown eggs we colored last night. the uncolored parts are where the kids wrote on them with a wax crayon. I will never be afraid to color brown eggs again. The ones with dark spots were super cool and looked like dinosaur eggs when colored. The dark brown eggs in yellow turned out pumpkin colored and the dark brown in blue were teal. Green and Red stayed true to color regardless of how dark the eggs was. Bear in mind we have no Merans, but these are wyandotte, old english game, austrolorp, partridge rock, red star and rhode island red eggs.
I did not try to color the ameraucana eggs as they are already so pretty. :)

Happy Easter Everyone. We are celebrating Jesus here today!

Beautiful Eggs. We blow ours out and paint them with paints.

On a side note. Any ideas about this: I have a delaware roo probably 5-6 months old. He won't walk, trys to get up and lays back down. He is eating cracked corn from my hand and the ground and I just saw him take a drink. no blood or apparent injuries, crop doesn't feel hard but also isn't full enough to see unlike every other chicken so I don't know if he ate before I gave him the corn. I have him separated in a cage and he just lays there. comb is red. I will start a thread in health also but thought I would ask some of you.

Here's the latest broody-wannabe, my Jersey Giant, Lenore, who doesn't live up to her breed's name. She's not quite 10 months old, so has a lot of growing to do yet, and she's a hatchery girl, so she probably won't be huge anyway. At any rate, she has been spending pretty much all day in this box for the past couple of days unless I turf her out, and she has a nice brood patch. She has been up on the roost at night, but I haven't left her anything to sit on, either.

I took away the two eggs she was sitting on this morning, and she has still refused to move, so I marked five of today's eggs and gave them to her just to see what she'll do.
