NY chicken lover!!!!

Exactly ! she thinks that is her nest box - is your shop ! Could you make a place outside your shop for her ? A wood box or crate with sawdust in it that she can lay in ?
that works for a few weeks, then she goes right back inthe shop

lol. I joked about Silkies on another thread. oh boy did one person take offence! She badgered me so bad I reported her and blocked her. I figured if you own silkies you must HAVE to have a sense of humor

My sense of humor has gotten me into more trouble. I really mean no harm. Never take anything I say to heart. I just like to make fun of Silkies. I figure if they can get here from what ever planet they came from , they can handle a little ribbing.

I don't own them cuz they know I'm on to them. I had two and when I would go near their pen they would stop what they were doing and just follow me with their eyes. It just creeped me out. Of course it might have been the tin foil hat but with Silkies you just never know.

I love reading this thread everyday. It's nice to see that I'm not alone in having spoiled chickens who think they own a pet human. My chickens have me so trained that all they have to do is make one sound and I know what they're asking for. Now they've learned to come up on my deck and peck at the door so I'll come out. If they get a cell phone I'm screwed. Unfortunately my neighborhood hawk has been making an appearance everyday this week. Today he sat on my deck railing until I ran outside to scare him away. Luckily my dog can hear the alarm call before I can and is racing to the door to scare the hawk away. I only give my girls a few hours of free time now because I have to be either outside with them or ready to run outside at any moment. Now that the age of 50 is knocking at my door I hope I don't have a heart attack when I'm sprinting outside.
Here's my dog keeping watch while I go on BYC.

My girls got spoiled late in the summer with free ranging. Then my neighbor had to move and asked me to babysit her 17 bantams. After some squaking and bullying everyone seemed fine. Then all of a sudden our nightly head count was off. I figured they weren't into the roosting routine and found shelter in the pines. Boy was I ever wrong! A hawk has picked off three roos and two hens. I am just sick over this especially since they aren't my birds. They are locked up in the coop and only let out if we can be right there. Anyone ever been chastised by RIR hens??? Wow can they be sassy.

Rancher, There are not too many people on this thread that have Silkies.
I wish you had them. Then I would have a bunch of info.

When we lost our Call Ducks our friend asked if we would like chickens?
AND we had NEVER had Chickens. We did not know breeds...anything.

She brought us 15 Silkies and we loved them. They are very friendly and
easy.

AND you said your were OLD.....is this a current photo? You are not old.
Sorry you are NOT into Silkies.

Amy, you are a gem.

Regards. Aria

Clayton--I have to hear it every day from my rir hens. They are sassy and bossy and demanding and nosey. If they arent yelling at me about something they are teilling me everything and demanding treats and to know what I am doing. If dh isnt turning over rocks and wood for them they are yanking on his pants to get him moving. Demanding divas but we love em!

Stony--nice of your hen to allow you to have a woodshop in her coop. I would check ebay and craigslist from time to time though to make sure she is trying to make a few extra dollars selling off your stuff!

Adorava--love the setup for the cheeps. Getting a puppy pen from my aunt so I can do the same thing for mine in the spring.

Jayin--nice that the dog comes pretrained to chase away the hawk! Good dog!

Rancher---youre getting younger! Whats the secret? Nice hat.

Let my silkies out when I got home so they can stretch and do chicken things. The girls are very demanding and vocal about getting out when I come home. Almost as bad as the rir pen! Each group gets and hour or so before it gets dark. The cold has set in so it means hauling water for the outside waterers and bringing in the silkie waterers (no room for heaters for them.) Heard my silkie roo Little Man go off at 230 this morning. He never does that so there must have been a critter around. Have to get dh to put up the game cam again. Okay, out to lock up the silkies and let out the beasties! Moving pine chips into their run as well. Have a good afternoon all!

Clayton - I've not seen a hawk in a while but I noticed there is a break in the tree near my hoop coop and something keep setting of the rat trap nailed to it. I turned it around this afternoon hoping the change will catch what ever it is.

Aria - Silkies are ok but they take more work than a normal chicken does. The rooster I did have would not shut up and the hen didn't lay eggs very well so I sold them. Non roosting chickens are messy and require constant cleaning of the floor. I just like to poke fun at them. I got the pic off the internet it's not me. I wish I looked that good.

DW liked the Silkies but not enough to clean up after them so they had to go. She also doesn't spend as much time with the chickens as I do. I usually go out in the afternoon cuz I have a hard time coming back inside. There's always puttzing to do.

Pharm - There are surprisingly quite a few pictures of guys with tin foil hats on the internet. They're probably all wondering why they're single too.

They should speak to me.. I didn't start wearing a tin foil hat until after I got married. I was smart enough not to wear it on dates too.
