NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. Sounds like everyone had interesting weather yesterday. Dh ended up pumping out the back yard 4 times before lunch. Rain finally stopped then. Didnt get the snow they were predicting. Left the cheeps locked up but I guess the terrorists worked Dh for some outdoor time last night before dark. They so own him!

County--very nice boys!
We did get rain but the winds were high!! Now it is snowing!!!! Maybe we will have a white Christmas!!

Oh Hen! How can you not feel sorry for your bees???? Poor things. I think the wind here was worse yesterday than with Sandy. I heard trees going down every where. One went down in my horse pasture across the fence. Like you I was dithering and had I done turnout on time, the horse probably would have gone though the fence trying to escape it.

How is white pine to burn? I despise that species! I walk around uprooting all the saplings this time of year! Good luck on bee hunting!!
White Pine is still pine. It burns like a house afire, when properly seasoned. HOWEVER you shouldn't burn pine indoors, unless you clean your own chimney regularly. (once a year isn't gonna do it if you are burning pine) Pine is full of sap, even when seasoned, and causes a lot of keosote to build up in your stove pipe and chimney. With that said, we burn pine mixed with hardwood all the time. We also clean our chimney/stove pipe 2 - 3 times a year. (doing so it currently number 2 of the "to do" list before Christmas, as I don't want you all to see my house on the Christmas news, in flames) If you want it for camp fires or outdoor fireplaces, it's GREAT. I once got an all pine camp fire going using only 3 paper plates as kindling. It burns fast so the coals were ready in no time for roasting marshmellows.

We had snow yesterday and only a couple of brave hens ventured out...into the snow free zone twelve inchs wide by the base of the coop. They are in for a bad four months. Such wimps.

One of Pearl's eggs hatched last night!!!!!

I am so excited! This is my first hatch ever!!! I went in there this morning to check on her and I heard teeny tiny little "peep peep peep's" I just HAD to look. So I kind of just layed a dish over Pearl to keep her from pecking at me and tilted her slightly one and then another and there it was!!! This teeny tiny little dark chick! It still needs to dry out so I just took one quick peek at it and let her be and cleaned out some of the poop in her box. Also set up my heat lamp.

And of course I haven't gotten to TS yet to get Chick Starter and it's a blizzard out there today! I hope it stops so I can get out otherwise I'll have my husband stop after work for me. He took my truck to work today because the AWD in his isn't working. So the only way I'll go out with the kids is if it stops. But I dont see this chick eating anytime soon - don't they go like 24hrs or so before actually trying food?

Lynzi, Congrats! So happy for you!
The chick should be fine for the first 24 hours, as they are still well fed from the egg. Water would be my first concern... something chicks can't drown in.
Yay!!!
Now I have the itch to hatch some chicks for spring. I just don't have the room!

I was worried about the chickens, but I just went out to check on them and they are just fine. I threw around some cereal and bread scraps and some scratch into their straw for something to do. It's not too cold in there. My unheated large stainless tub of water was slushy but not frozen. I added a 2 liter bottle of hot water.
I feel better that they seem snug out there.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful.

Hubby ventured out this morning to care for the critters. Horses staying in again, chickens are out of the coop but barn is closed up. They got the largest pumpkin today as a treat. Wind is horrible here, but no damage. We are supposed to venture out to some Christmas party for hubby's side, but we may not be leaving the house. Snow is drifting badly, no plows have been through, we can't risk wrecking the car as my truck is out of commission. I'm glad for the white Christmas, but it can calm down a bit. Shopping tomorrow, heading to Ithaca for that, should be interesting.

Snow plow just went through. *drats*. I'd rather stay home, clean, maybe bake something and stay by the woodstove.

We got snow and I snowblowed all around, but have to make a clean up pass. Had to catch two hens who were knee deep in snow. All the others were inside. Even the ones with a run and open door were inside.

We have a wedding this evening and I don't want to go. It's in Lafayette and we're in Syracuse. Good garden o' peas, they've been shacking for years. Even have grandchildren. I didn't even know they weren't married. It's family so DW will insist on going but still..... After all these years I say just get married and for get the party. What can you give someone who's been living together for years? Plus winter weddings are a pain in the neck.

Sorry if I missed someone postings I can't keep up.

Henn - sorry about the bees. Hope things turn out ok. I use a lot more honey than I used to. In my tea.
