I believe the one I got from you is a roo which is fine I'll just need some hens to go with him!

You're on. I've got some eggs in the incu now. How much room do you have?

Did you get the article on hatching and set those eggs?

I think my RIR is broody. I may give her some BR eggs. If I had some EE's I give her those. I also think Buckwheat is broody and perhaps the EE that is in with the Dels. Just too many.

Supposed to be warmer tomorrow.

Evening all! I see we have been having a lively discussion on roosters, hatcheries and hatching. I have to say that all of my lf cheeps came from a hatchery. The first 8 were from Agway and the terrorists from NJ. They arrived well and healthy and have developed into decent layers. The terrorists were ordered as a straight run so out of 25 chicks, 19 were hens and the rest roos. We ate all but two roos. I have some heritage rir hatching eggs coming the first week of march (thanks to the sale of my silkie boys) and they are from a breeder who has a decent line. It will be interesting to see how these birds (I am being optimistic about the hatch) compare to the hatchery ones I have. Of course this means I will be eating a few of the current residents but they have lived a great life as a chicken should and so I honor them by eating them. I guess I am like stony in that regard. People often ask me how can I eat something I raised. I answer that I know I gave it good food, a chance to live a normal life and a great place to live. I know what it ate so I know what I will be eating. I hate storebought chicken now.

I will be hatching out some of my eggs as well and will try selling the chicks this spring. It will be my first time doing so and I wont do a whole lot so if they dont sell I can just give them away. I will have rir and black sexlinks if all goes well with my new incubators. Now my silkies are a different story. I will only do maybe one or two hatches with them and sell the chicks to the locals. I carefully invested in the best lines that I could afford and they are gorgeous. I am just not into the whole showing thing. They are my babies and are spoiled as such.

County--nice pics of the eagles. I like to see birds of prey. They have a place in the world and are magnificent to watch, especially when hunting. Its only when hunting chickens that I object!!!

Rancher--glad you are getting more eggs. I think the weather is causing mine to fluctuate. Their counts are erratic this week.

My hen with the prolapse seems much better. Its all back in and is healing although she may slough off some dead skin around her vent. She is a very fiesty red sexlink and is not taking kindly to confinement. She hasnt laid an egg yet (which is good) so I am kind of waiting to see what happens when she does. I am hoping for the best but my crockpot is prepared for the worst.

Ta ta everyone. Laundry calls and I am opening tomorrow so its early to bed tonight for me!

I have lots of room :) I didn't get the article?? I don't trust my current hygrometer so I'm waiting til I pick up a new one before incubating. I'm thinking my last batch had too much humidity :/ It isn't too cold to let hens sit?

Well now my Grandmother held that very rule. Everyone in the family was fine with it til my grandfather died. No one ate meat until they were sure he'd been in the ground for a good long time.

I don't know your status but if you have one I'd warn your husband to keep working not to retire for a good long time.

I must have forgot to send it. No it's not to cold, they seem to do fine. Which is confusing considering how much trouble we go to hatch using an incubator.

I'll send that article right away.

I was going to order from a hatchery to get cornish (not finding many for sale, eggs or birds) and getting straight run so I don't feel like a chick killer. It looks like there is a poultry show at the state fairgrounds in June. Don't they usually have a sale area? Perhaps that would be a good place to get a few quality birds in the hard to find breeds.

All this talk of hatcheries and chicks reminds me- is there any sort of chicken swap/meetup type thing around New York? The only event that comes to mind is the Big E. I'm really curious if there's anything else even remotely nearby where people can go meet/talk to other chicken folk and buy non-hatchery chicks/chickens?
