NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all, just joined today, and find wowie! 1700+ pages of posts from NYer's. Needless to say I did not read them all

I saw several posters who live in my general vicinity. I'm near Oswego and Fulton. I would LOVE to hear how you all deal with our winter winds, (constant, cold, blustery lol) and have plenty of draft free ventilation for your coops? I am in the hunt for coop plans currently. I mentioned that same thing in my (long

) intro post also.

Question for you all.

I want to sell my chicks after they hatch, since I can't keep them. Do I need to get any special permits or anything of the sorts to do this, or can I just put them on here and craigslist and hope they sell? I just want to make my money back on the eggs...so I can get more eggs and make it a wonderful cycle :)

Well I did it! I went down the road to JJ Feeds this morning to pick up a couple of bags of chicken and rabbit feed and I ordered ducklings! I'll be getting 3 khaki campbells the 2nd week of April when I get back from my trip to CT. 2 ducks and a drake. Wish I was getting them sooner but I didn't want to get them before my trip and have to ask DH to take care of them while I'm gone.

I just had to share this photo of a gorgeous Red Fox we saw up in Ontario on Saturday morning. He (or she) was being a "good fox" and just soaking up some sun near the lake. Hopefully, this one is not guilty of assaulting anyone's chickens. I realize as we're on a chicken lover's forum, this is NOT usually an animal you want to see (at least not near your coop)...but it was too lovely not to share, and we were psyched to have had such a close encounter with one in the wild.

Beautiful!! We have a lot of foxes here. As long as they stay away from the chickens they get to live. We have had excellent luck with the netting. we have seen a fox chceking out the fence, but the don't get in.

I was totally doing a happy dance this morning! Got a bullet between the eyes.

Setting the traps the rest of the week in case it has a mate nearby.

Hi Cooped Up Chick and WELCOME !!!

This winter's refusal to die has me feeling cooped up as well. Good luck with your coop plans. There are some excellent threads as well as a helpful gallery of coop images on this site. I'm also getting ready to start up with my 1st chickens in about 5 or 6 weeks -- my coop is about 1/3 complete. We're making construction very tight, but should have very good ventilation. Think carefully about your site, too, which can help some with issues like wind, excessive sun, etc. We changed our mind a few times before settling on a spot which I think will work out well. Good luck.

Thanks, vmd. Did you always have the netting or did you have a different pen set up initially and then beefed things up?

I am sooo sick of this cold!! Spring is not coming soon enough! Anyways all 5 of my chickies that hatched over the weekend are doing great! I'm pretty sure they have already grown lol! Now I just need to get my hands on some fertile eggs so I can fill up the bator again! I could use my own but they all would be mutts. I'm thinking maybe some blue or lav orps? My hubby will love it hehe.

I bought Lav Orp eggs on ebay ftom terra_farms, i was not impressed with the packaging but all arrived intact and i had a 70% hatch rate.

My cheeps have been doing just fine this winter. As a matter of fact I even chicks out there that I decided to move outdoors when they were about a month old and we were getting some warmer weather. So they have adjusted to the colder weather now and the stronger winds. They've been cooped up quite a bit which isn't making them or any of the others too happy but they'll be out free ranging again soon. (As soon as it stops snowing!)
