NY chicken lover!!!!

Cass, I'm new, but yesterday I did see a thread with pictures that someone did just that because they had an eggeater. If I find it I'll post it.
The case we are talking about is a Craig's List ad selling their adult birds before they box them up to go to Canada for processing (read "made into soup").

The rule of thumb I use regarding adult birds is to never obtain them from anyone I don't trust with my birds lives....because that is just what you are doing....an adult bird can be a carrier of any number of diseases that your flock is not immune to and wipe out your entire coop's population (minus the new birds, cuz they ARE immune) I have added adult birds to my flock, but I trusted the person I got them from. And history has shown my trust was not misplaced; all my birds are still alive and thriving. If someone is giving away adult birds they may well be doing so to start over because they have an egg eater. Do you really want to save money on obtaining your flock only to not get the number of eggs you should get because one of the "free" birds is an egg eater?

CM has another pet food recall. Seems they have a lot of those. Never any chicken feed sales though. Ugh! Which btw , those chickens going to Canada are most likely not going into soup.

Take care, love ya,

Rancher
Ewww...I forgot about grinding them into pet food, but that would explain why Canada, not NJ. I prefer to think "soup". at least they cut that up, not grind it. *singing* "Chicken lips and gizzard chips and tasty toe jam pies..." (I knew all those years in Child Care would come in handy to gross someone out someday)

I wonder if they make or I could make a nest box that the egg dissappeared into the back so the hens can't eat them, poop on them or do those other things that hens seem to find a way to do when they discover where the last sista laid their egg.
Yes, roll away nest boxes. I really really want one, but the homemade ones I made they hated and the cool pre-made ones are outta my budget. :)

I finally went and looked at this ad today to see how far the location was from me (It's about an hour and 20 min drive for me) to see if I could help out but don't understand the "saving" part of this ad if they are asking $3 a bird.
I would agree... I think these are birds past their "prime" and $3 a bird is more than they were offered from Canada. Just the way the person is handling the bird, it screams "heartless chicken farmer". lol We can't save them all, as much as we'd love to.
Hey! I just joined as well and I'm in the lovely little town of Mexico

I've just got my first little flock of chickies, 10 Red sex links, 2 bantams (from the TSC bantam bin lol..) and 2 Amerarcauna's, 2 Black Australorps and 2 Speckled Sussex from Deaton's in fulton. I must say... they are addicting! Our girls are only a week old so I have some time to get our coop ready (a rehabbed outbuilding/old house) but man... this snow... it really needs to GO AWAY! Lovely to meet you all! Perhaps when the weather warms we could meet and brainstorm chicky ideas :)
Welcome!

Neighbor stupidness...
Dh was talking to him last week. Mind you, this is the same neighbor that lets his cat roam our property. They were talking about raccoons, etc both of us have been trapping. He was commenting that there seems to be so many. He asks dh, "Are you sure your chickens aren't drawing them in? They're even going in the barn and eating the cat's food".
Ya ever just wanna slap someone upside the head?

Weasel issue, saw an oppossum last night trying to eat said weasel (still dead in the trap. dh didn't have time), and now there were 2 red tail hawks sitting on the pole across the street all day. I can't win.

Welcome to hotel California. Where you can enter anytime you like but you can NEVER leave.

We had a skunk problem when we first moved in due to cat food on the garage floor. Gotta keep that stuff up off the floor and or put away. Either that or kill them all. More will come to take their place though.
