NY chicken lover!!!!

I must confess I don't have time to deal with sickly chicks or chickens. Not good for them or me. So the minute I see a problem I don't prolong either of our agony and put them down right away. New born chicks are very fragile and pass on quickly.
I really should have said something sooner. I was going to. But more often than not my blunt to the point ,say it as it is approach is taken as trouble making or worse. So I didn't as every time I do someone or multiple people get peeved at me. And a few who are afraid to defend me simply pm me. As they don't want to make it public and also get the poop thrown at them. Such is why I post so little.
I too kill chicks that aren't going to make it as soon as possible. I simply don't have the time either and yes, it is what is best for the chicks.

Yeah I did it. Sadly she wasn't going to make it. We had three people crying my 7 year old son 5 year old daughter an me. Wife was only one not crying. Kids said we had to burry her so we laid her down a few feet from a tree I planted last year. So my first flock is down to eleven chicks now. Gonna have to find another chick for my even twelve I want. We had some chick time had all 11 out in livening room. Well gonna get off here and watch some tv. Thanks for all the help and advice.

I am sorry for your loss. I don't know how far you are from E.Syracuse, but I have chicks hatching on the 3rd , Lord willing, or I have some BM's and Dels about 3 wks old. If you'd like to replace her with one.

Someone suggested I post my search here. Im looking for a breeder of Belgian Cuckoo Malines (Meschels)... Particularly the turkey headed Golden Malines. There are breeders in Canada and Im hoping someone here in the States will have eggs for sale. Thank you.

Lord have mercy! Not another breed for me to covet? I thought I'd heard or seen every breed there is.

Help me Jesus!

Had a close call last evening when I went to shoo the birds back.. I have one group of chickens that I only let out when home, as they don't have an electric fence to protect them when free ranging, and when I went out to check on them I saw 'something' running into the woods. Bah. Still not entirely sure what it was as I only saw the backside - it was brown, waddly and had the body shape of a raccoon but I don't recall seeing the ringed tail, just a bushy tail like a fox. But I think it was a coon for some reason - maybe I was just too panicked to check out the tail properly but seemed like too much junk in the trunk for a fox. In either case no birds were harmed (another point for coon, as I think they usually prefer their birds trapped up).. And my poor 'prisoners' will have to stay in today. Bah.

Would love to move my prisoner chickens back to the coops with the electric fencing but no room until I can downsize more. I think the other chickens also saw the animal as they were alarming when I went out there..

Will put the game cam on tonight and let's see what we see. I have combo locks on my doors so let's see ricky raccoon figure those out.

Happy Easter y' all.

A predator sighting is what brought me here originally. We saw a fox in the field just down the road after some birds I think, but it was there none the less. We were on our way to church so I dropped DW and GD off and came back home.

I had let the birds out and the marans are not in a run. Otherwise I would not have been so concerned. That and the fact that a fox can wipe out the whole flock.

I walked through the woods and saw nothing, but called the chickens up near the house and started a fire in the pit. It's plenty wet still.

Thanks for support guys/gals.
Yeah I have to get some ameracuanas or ee's once these chicks grow up wife wants colored eggs. I personally like the marking on the blrw saw some nicked colored ones in the sell forums. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/746009/blrw-day-old-chicks. Personally the dark red/blue they have pics of there. Don't know what color eggs I just like the look of them.

Let me know when the time comes and I'll hatch a few for you.

These past 2 or 3 days, I've had a bumper crop of woodchuck sightings. When they're running and you're viewing them from behind, they have that bit of a hunch-back raccoonish shape, and definitely a waddly gait. Who knows, though...

jlaw...

So sorry about that little chick -- you shouldn't feel too badly, because you really gave her the benefit of the doubt and tried your best. To me, she appeared to be getting worse, rather than better. Sorry your kids had to experience that, as well, but it is probably a beneficial life lesson.

Glasshen...

I'm also sorry to hear about your Speckled Sussex. I know you were very fond of her.

Despite the cruddy weather today, the coop construction continues. Shingles were completed yesterday. Who knew I could be halfway decent with a hammer, and my 12-year old was right up there with me, laying those shingles down and banging away. Hubby has been wonderful and kind to devote so much time to a hobby that is not of his choosing or interest...

HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE!
