NY chicken lover!!!!

Update on hatch.

As for dry hatching POO! This is not a good hatch at all.

The EE's usually do much much much better. So far 1/10 that is NOT good. The Dels 4/8 with one nearly out. The CR's 3/5. one that I thought was an orp is a CR.

The marans,

0/8. One was working and out of frustration I took it out and cracked the shell all the way around. I do know these guys have the hardest shell of all the chickens. That is without added calcium.

so the count is 1 EE, 3 CR's, and 5 Dels. This is day 21 though so being that they were set late in the day there may still be hope.

Take care folks, lots to do,

Rancher

Hope you can get a few more late arrivals, Rancher. I can sense your frustration loud and clear. Keep us posted...

a Sumatra hen and her fresh kill. A small frog or toad. She was quite popular for a few minutes . EVERYONE wanted that fresh killed meat! I can't tell you how much vegetarian chicken fod makes me laugh! Chickens LOVE meat!

Was this today? Must have been a frozen frog! I love the pic of her booking away with her prize!

And the other chickens trying to capture their prize !
They are Equal Opportunity Foragers ..Bugs , Grass , Frogs ..Turtles..Smaller Birds ...what ever they can get ..a Balanced Diet

vegetarian chicken food makes me laugh too ! a passing fad !

That totally cracks me up. Chickens being fed a "vegetarian" diet. Ugh. Not my chickens.

yup about 10 minutes before I posted the pic. I don't know where she found it, but she sure was happy

One of our RIR girls caught a frog and it was a clucking - capture the flag - kind of fun!

Well off to the movies have to celebrate sons birthday early. We got a call from hospital a kid got sick so an opening came open for an earlier surgery slot. So we goto Rochester tomorrow for pre-op. surgery is Friday. Running around the house trying to set up for being away for a bit thought we had more time.

Chickens are going to hate me when I finally get back. They just started to like me. I just had wife buy meal worms like right before we got the call from hospital. Will it be ok to toss them in the brooder when I change the bedding? Didn't know if they would die fast and then make chicks sick if they eat them. Or will they keep for like a week in the fridge? I tried giving a few to them already seemed only one silkie ate them all other birds was too slow. I thought they would chase him but he ate it in one bite.

Well almost to movies later all.

Josh

Jlaw- Hope surgery goes well. I think you can freeze mealworms.

I'm headed to Rochester myself for a monday dentist appointment for my daughter. I've been having trouble finding an in plan pediatric dentist that will help her.

I am newish here and looking for some eggs to use for a Teen program at our library where I am the Youth Librarian. I have had chickens for years and LOVE everything about them but would like to get some new breeds. I have Buff Orpingtons and Americanas. Don't judge my spelling, sorry! I tried ordering some eggs the last couple of years and they are so unlucky. All the eggs I find locally hatch out but never the mailed ones. I am guessing it's just not a great way to get eggs. Is there a swap around the Binghamton area or do any of you sell eggs for hatching? We have a modest budget but I can pay for the eggs. Thanks so much.
I'll be heading up to Tab's sometime soon, maybe this weekend, if you want any eggs transported back.

grass. I can wish, can't I?

They will do just fine in the fridge. Put them in a container with small pinholes for air. They go dormant and will wake up again when they warm up again. They may curl up but they are still alive. If they turn black or very dark brown they have died. HTH.

Nope, you can NOT freeze mealworms. They'll croak. But they will last a long time in the fridge... months.

Get some cornmeal and put some of that and the mealworms in a tupperware or disposable rubbermaid container with air holes...you can leave them on the counter for a REALLY LONG time as long as they have the cornmeal, and they will get bigger too...my daughter has mealwroms leftover from a science project a couple months ago that she feeds and we plan to feed them to our chicks when they get a bit bigger.
