NY chicken lover!!!!

My Jersey Not-So-Giant is currently in a kennel in the garage. I let the troops out to mosey around this afternoon, and noticed that I didn't see her. I found the stupid thing stuck behind a box in the coop, head-down and unable to extricate herself. I think she was trying to get back there to lay an egg and misjudged the space. Dopey thing. She was really out of it when I found her, so I isolated her. She ended up laying an egg within minutes of being in the kennel, and then just stood with her eyes shut. Poor girl. She's much better now, and is eating and drinking. I'll put her out with the others in the morning if she's OK - I'm pretty sure she will be, as think she just had to recover.

Here's my handsome, overly eager young Easter Egger. I've named him Harry Potter, because he's the Boy Who Lived.

Well I'm back in Rochester. Daughter is due to get out Monday they say. She blew the 2-4 weeks recovery out of the water with a 1 week 2.5ish days.

Mother inlaw went to feed the chicks yesterday and almost killed one... It's my fault though I for got to tell her I hand feed them. So when she went to feed them a silkie or the leghorn ran at her and she almost back handed it. 8 inch man eating chickens I raise scare people bad.

I need to find some free or cheap pallets so I can build my coop. Wife is about to kill me because I keep changing how I want to build it.

Sorry to hear about the wet chicks I was worried ya lost them when I first started reading about it.

Wife just showed me a Facebook thing about KFC not using real chickens. They say they have no beaks no feet and no feathers. The pics they did with the link showed chicks with feet and beaks but no feathers... I love when she shows me Facebook stuff cause then I get to google all the crap and show how such and such is photo shopped or has been a rumor for years. So now I get to google KFC and look up all this info.
Glad to hear your little chick is still improving

You almost always totally crack me up ...
8 inch Mother in Law - eating chickens ..You shouldnt raise scary chickens THAT is NOT NICE

Would it be safe to bring out 3 week ish old chicks tomorrow if we really hit 70? They're just starting to feather and I'd bring their heat lamp out with them.

Yes ! My 4 weeks will be out ..
I have had them out at 50 ...at 3 weeks . If there is More sun THan Clouds they should be fine .
You can tell if they are cold they will huddle ..
Be prepared to chase them if they are not in a run ..LOL

This is one of my problems when looking for coops that are custom built. I don't need all this wasted space in a tall coop because my chickens don't even roost! Not even my two Orpington hens! Everytime I've gone out there to lock them up at night, they're snuggled away in one nestbox-that's ONE nestbox!

Perhaps you can make a communal space. I had one nest box that was divided in two but when I moved it pulled the divider out so now it's two hens wide. My BR rooster and one or two girls sleep on the floor. I tried and tried to get him to roost but he won't so he sleeps on a bale of straw. It's not healthy IMO but what can I do? At least the hay is clean.

Most of the older coops we see on farms are high in the front and low in the back. I don't know who decided to make them tall like they are now. Takes too much lumber IMO. To me it's just wasted space. I wish there was a way I could use it.

I've considered converting one of my runs to coop but it would have a dirt floor and I'm not up for that.

I've done it. Put 3 week old chicks outside for the day when it is cooler than 70. At 3 weeks old they shouldn't have 90 degree heat on them. Or I should say they don't need it. The rule is lower the temp 5 degrees a week. I usually speed that up. By 4 weeks, no heat. Don't need it.

I think you mean raise, but I agree. Even now my chicks shy away from the heat light area. IMO 250 is to much. I've had hens raise chicks outside when it's colder. But for the other birds they'd do fine. I think if they had more space and would be safe from preds chicks would be ok.

I would put my three week olds outside right now if I used a heat lamp. With the ecoglow I keep them in until temps are above 50 consistently or until they are about four weeks old. My chicks are in room temp (about 60 degrees) most of the day and just snuggle in the heat at night.

Today is hatch day and I don't have even one pip •_• this is upsetting. I have seen a couple move but not a lot. On another note we have been pulling ticks off our dogs everyday for a week and today my son had one crawling on him. A lady down the road has lots of Guinea fowl so we are getting 6 of them! Ticks irritate me!

I would give it a day and see what happens. Remember I have chicks for you and perhaps you can talk to Trish and see if she is up for a few more birds. I've got broodies on eggs and am considering pulling the plug on the incu now.

I really just want a couple more EE and three more Del hens so there are sure to be more than I need. Iv'e got Birchen Marans too and it looks like I'll have enough pullets for the increase I want.

I suppose once spring gets going and the predators start taking birds folks will be looking for replacements. Not that I'd wish that on anyone, but such is life.

I have another job interview tomorrow so keep your fingers crossed. This last fiasco has taken some of the wind out of my sails.
