NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm finally moving the chicks to the garage brooder tonight. My silkies and lav orps are starting to feather nicely! I'll make sure to post pics later!

I also found since coop design with split runs that will fit up to 30 chickens...I may succumb to chicken math...

I have to get off this website. I'm starting to think a couple dozen chickens would be a good idea, and that I *need* at least 12 more ducks.

This all started with me wanting enough chickens for eggs for my family.

We've been without internet since sunday. I am able to get on my nook at the neighbors. Hopefully time warner will be out to fix it. I'll have to catch up when it comes back on. Lost power yesterday,, someone hit a pole near us. It was out for a few hours and we may lose 90 eggs we had in the bator. Arg! not been the best week.

Well I do hope the eggs survived. Amazing how the eggs under a hen survive her getting of to eat and poop, but let the power go out for a bit. 90 eggs? Lord have mercy where will you put all those chickens?

I do 35 and am happy if half make it. Of course it's always the breeds I don't need.

I wanted to tell you DW made your Breakfast casserole and it was very good. She used Italian sausage, peppers, tomatoes and brocolli.

In other news I moved Buckwheat and her lone chick to the coop but the darn chick got behind the hay bales and I had to move things to get it out. I just tossed it the brooder with the others. Looks to be an EE. Sex unknown.

Oh Tab that reminds me, how the baby coming? Did I mention that we are going to be grandparent one more time? DD is having #2.
I bought a copy of "Baby Come Out" for DD to read to Darcy when she gets a little bigger. DD not Darcy.

This weather has been good to work outside. Lots to do every spring. I've got to stop with the expanding the garden and building more coops or bigger runs. I might get the garden completely surrounded and gates built. That will keep the chickens out of there but then there are the Berry bushes to surround. Ugh! I need about a million $$ worth of chicken wire and those green metal posts.

Lots of news. Had a hawk attack day before yesterday. Maybe the hawk was young, or maybe my shrieks put it off, but the hen it had down was ok and made its way to the coop when I got close enough to scare the bird off. Then it got a different hen, but she too is fine.

Reveille and two RIR girls have gone to their new home in a converted camper, and I hear they are fine.

So I'm in Chick mode! Got 4 silver laced Wyandotte chickies. But those delawares Rancher has sound nice. Do you have too many of them? And I'd love more Sussex, but there is the roo problem...oh dear. Tick eaters would be nice...

They're here!!! And they ALL made it safe and sound!

and they look........LAVENDER!

Tab - Sorry to hear about the power! I hope you don't lose all those eggs!

Last night I went out at 8 to close up the coops and I saw what I'm about 95% sure was a raccoon making it's way up the mountain, I'm assuming it was heading to the creek to get water. It was moving too slow to be a cat. Then this morning around 11am when I was heading up the road to pick up the chicks I saw something in the distance cross the street into someone's yard, thought it was a groundhog but as I got closer and looked into the yard it was another raccoon!! Didn't have much of a tail left so I'm wondering if something got to it and thats why it was out during the day??

I am not in the mood to start dealing with these things again, but I do have to say, leaving our porch light on all night, the light over our sink that shines light thru the window into the backyard definitely helped last year! Guess we'll see if that keeps them away this summer as well.

Hope the eggs survive the outage! What day are you on? I wonder if there is a time of incubation when it would be relatively better to temporarily lose heat, or if it doesn't matter one way or the other.

Glad your hens both survived that persistent but unsuccessful hawk. Good thing you were there to thwart the attacks. What kind was it, do you know? Out of curiosity, what kind of hens -- (size)? I'm curious as to how big of a bird a hawk will target. Red-tails, I imagine, would go big, no problem...

I was wondering about whether you had gotten anymore Speckled Sussex since you lost your bird recently. Good luck with the new Wyandotte chicks.

This wind we're having here is just plain awful. Driving my mother back from an eye app't. today, Rte 81 through Lafayette was SCARY for gusting. Here in Otisco, it sounds like my house is going to spin off like Dorothy's in the Wizard of Oz.
